Economic conditions in Indonesia in general has not yet improved. Performance ofthe reform has not felt the people

Consequently there is no certainty. Social upheavals and pragmatism hit innocent people. Ironically emerging separatist, worse still there want to be independent andseparated from the motherland's lap.

In fact the people during these kepempinan need strong, decisive, pro-democracyand pro-people.

That's what makes concerned Raja Sultan Iskandar Sultan Machmud Badaruddin ofPalembang Darussalam.

"I am concerned about the current condition of Indonesia. Indonesia is now is like acracked mirror, "said Iskandar was appointed as Chairman of the Foundation afterRaja Sultan Nusantara (YARASUTRA), Wednesday (21/12/2011) night in Jakarta.

The event was attended 100 King and the Sultan from all over Indonesia, the presidents and a number of ambassadors of friendly countries.

"Therefore, I urge the government to invite us to solve various problems for the sakeof progress and prosperity of this country." He said.

The King also called on the government through (Regional Assistance Government Budget) budget provide a specific budget to the King and the Sultan who has beencredited for his contribution
forerunner to the establishment of Indonesia.

"I ask this proposal because not all the king Sultan's present economic condition ofboth. I even heard of King Sultan who come here (Jakarta, red) for his personalexpenses had to sell cows, "he said.

Alluding to the formation of YARASUTRA, Alexander insists the election was notpolitical aims.

Descendant of the Napoleon of the island of rajas installed

West of the island of Timor lies the Rote islands,which archipelago consists of the main island of Rote,the island of Ndao and several other;unhabited;islands.
Once this archipelago had 19 principalities,so it was once the most densily with principalities populated area of Indonesia.
It has a surface of ca. 1214 km2 with now ca. 120.000 people.Apart from the many Rote people living on Timor and elsehwere in the province of NTT and more further.
The principalities differed in size,amount of people and years of existence.
But one principality came back in the history of this archipelago as an ambtious area:the nusak,or principality of Termanu.
Several times it's rulers tried to unite the raja rule of the whole archipelago of Rote Ndao under it's rule,but always in vain.The last time it was really tried was during the rule of the 16th raja: Manek Mauk Amalo(1820-1827).Because of acting with to much passion he was deposed and exiled from the island.After a raja from a side-line and several short rules,they found it better to call back the strong,but before aggressive ex-raja,who now had become a Christian and used his name,which he already had before as a crownprince:Daniel Johannes Mauk Amalo
He had done good service in between for Holland in a battle with another ambitious raja:the manek of the quite good populated principality of Dengka.
So from 1840 he was again the manek of Termanu.But he maybe had changed his old religion,but his ruling ambitions still wandered in his mind and now with more idealism he tried to make one kingdom of the Rote islands:a normal process we can see all over the world.
But the way he tried to reach it was not liked by the then paramount power in the area:Holland.
They disapproved his brutal way of acting and other matters.So in februari 1843 he was again deposed and exiled.This time to Ambon and later with his oldest son to Surabaya.
His clan was removed from Rote,because then being to influential stil.
For some time the rule was returned to the previous side/line of the dynasty,but in 1860 returning to the Amalo branch and that remained so mostly until the present time( as son of the brother of Ex-manek Mauk Amalo became the new manek in 1859).
From ca. 1910 espacially Holland tried to unite a lot of little principalities on Rote and elsewhere in Indonesia to have a more beter coördination and overview over each area.On Rote the 19 different dynasties now became sub-district rulers under a paramount ruler.
The Amalo dynasty then still for all kind of reasons was seen as a dynasty,who could deliver a good candidate for the paramount rule:Crownprince Jacob Amalo in the last part of the unification already.
But most of the other 18 dynasties were much against a paramount rule of the before seen as the Napoleon dynasty of Rote.Already for long the characteristics of this dynasty had changed, but stll the old fears were there,not in the least by the 3 dynasties,who had seperated themselves from Termanu in ca. 1772.
For some reasons even Prince Jacob Amalo never became a manek of Termanu.His youngest brother Ernst Johannis Jeremias Michiel Amalo became in 1947 finally the manek of Termanu,from 1914-1946 Termanu was ruled by his uncle and 2 of his cousins(sons of that uncle).
The facts,that Prince Ernst Amalo became manek was in fact the following of an old rule,to let the raja as much as possible be succeeded by his youngest son(so that the rule would be stable,because a young raja would enable a long rule,a vast succesion of rajas would produce an unstable atmosphere).
From 1912 the rajas of Termanu also were the districtchiefs of Lomakoli and in 1918 that district was enlarged to a bigger district called Rote Talada.
From before 1928 Holland then first asked a prince of the manek dynasty of OEpao to be the government raja of the Rote islands.This trully Christian protestant priest was known as a peacemaker above to serve him as a raja.
So then they found a colonial official,who was member of the vice-raja clan of the oldest principality on Rote:Joël Simon Kedoh from Landu.
It was the good,that he married the sister of the later Manek Ernst Amalo,because then he would be better accepted and respected by the rajas.
Manek Ernst Amalo ruled in fact only really in Termanu until 1963,because,although Rote was a bit decentralised later,after ca. 1930,at the end there were sill some districts.
Manek Ernst Amalo was such a districtruler from 1963-1966;represented locally in Termanu by his sub-raja,or fettor called Franz Biredoko.
In 1966,the time,when more and more the raja governments on these islands ceased to exist sem-offically and officially,he choose to make a carrier in the regional politics.
He was succeeded until 1970 by the son of his brother Migel/Michiel:Manek John Amalo(already deceased before 2000).
Also on the Rote islands the government and society had reorientated themselves on the values of the traditional local social systems from ca. 2000,as elsewhere in Indonesia,to be stimulated and enabled by the national deenrtaliaton laws of 1999 and by oher central regulated matters .
Many good values in it were rediscovered.Total harmonious society was hoped for.
On 14-10-2007 the oldest son of the last regarded real elected manek of Termanu;Manek Ernst Amalo(Manek John Amalo was more see as a temporary replacement of him,because his uncle was still alive(and died only in 1984))Prince Soleman Jermias Miquel Amalo was installed as the dynastychief of Temanu and his brother Joel J.M. Amalo as the crownprince.In 2004 the dynastychief was already regarded semi-officially as dynastychief,but his bad health already gave the idea better later to make is brother Prince Joël the new manek.
In 2007 they stil wanted to give the oldest son of the last real manek the honour to function officially as dynastychief,but in 2011 he would make place for his brother Prince Joël Amalo.
So on 15-10-2011 after more than 60 years again a new chosen manek was installed by the council of 16(the present coördinator was the former first mayor of Kupang city,Prince Messakh Amalo.)
In fact the total installation days;before,during and after the actual installation;was open for many people,the actual installation day for everybody,but in fact they had kept it a more innerdynastic affair.
So the other 18 dynasties of Rote Ndao were attending on a representative basis by Manek Reverend Soleman Zacharias of Loleh,the local government by Vice-Governor Drs. Esthon Foenay of the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur and by Camat(sub-districtchief) Drs. Jhon Nite of Rote Tengah(Middle- Rote) with their delegations.
The provincial royalty was represented by Raja/Usif Leopold Isu Nisnoni of Kupang(his mother was the sister of Manek Ernst Amalo),Usif Drs. Theodorus Taolin of Insana/Timor(his sister is married with the first mayor of Kupang city;Prince Messakh Amalo,being the son of a former regent- raja of Termanu),Raja Michael Bria;vice-liurai of Malakka/Belu/Timor and Liurai Joseph Seran of Waiwiku/Belu/Timor.
Manek Joël Jermias Miquel Amalo is for long known as a member of the local parliament of the district of Kupang,of which until not so long ago Rote Ndao was a part.
The Rote people are known for being quite sobre in their ceremonies,so after some welcome and other dances for the high guests and the to be installed raja,there was only a relative simple ceremony,wich made him the new manek of Termanu.The list of the rajas was mentioned.Termanu was before ruled by 34 rajas,of which a few were temporary rajas, and only a some from outside the dynasty.The first raja was Ma Bulan and before him the ruling clan know 15 more names of ancestors,who not lived on Rote.
Also the glory of the dynasty was mentioned and the history of the nusak,or principality mentioned as well.
Then the statedagger,or keris,belonging to each of the to be installed maneks of Termanu,then was handed over to him and also a nice decorated box in which was laid the Bible on which the dynasty had promessed since 1827 to found their rule upon.The before very ambitious last Napoleon of Rote Ndao,Mau Amalo(deposed for the first time in 1827) was the last non-Christian manek of Termanu.
After the blessing by the protestant priest and praying to the Almighty he was the new manek of Termanu.Of course also he weared the special local woven traditional clothes as well the ti ilanga;a hat special from Rote, made by natural material and inspirated by the 16th century Portugese hats,which were on Rote Ndao before the Dutch people.From a hat,you can see from which area the owner is and what is his function in society.(The Ti langa is als a symbol of the Rote Ndao islands and also used a bit as a symbol in the local province of NTT).
Also this installation also can be seen as the first real open installation of a manek,or dynastychief of a nusak ,or area of Rote Ndao in the so-called modern time.Before also in Thie,Loleh,Baa,Landu and some others areas a new manek,or dynastychief was installed,but only in more innerdynastic ceremonies..
May the example of Termanu to preserve the good things in the traditional social system(also a holy advise by the Almighty)be followed by the other dynasties of Rote Ndao islands,before known not also as the most densily by principalities populated area,but also as the area,where the rajas ceased as the last one's in Indonesia to rule as a raja or by rajas in fact.

Hero of the cultural restoration of the Indonesian kings died

Once there was a man,who had the name Kanjeng Pangeran Haryo Gunarso Kusumodingrat;belonging to the Imperial Court of Surakarta on Java.
He was a journalist from origin and a personal secretary of Susuhunan Paku Buwono XII of Surakarta;the highest monarch of Indonesia.
This Prince Gunarso had promessed once in his life to dedicate himself to the cultural restoration of the Indonesian royal culture (300 dynasties in Indonesia).
He did that as no one else could do with a lot of results.
The biggest result, that some years ago the Indonesian government recognized again all the ca. 300 dynasties of Indonesia again and ordered the local governments to protect and support the royal local culture.
When you thought of Prince Gunarso you thought of the Indonesian kings.
Yes;he really gave his life;really to the end. His family, his religion and his royal dedication were the goals to where his spirit went to.
Many fruits he could take from his continuous hard work.
Supported by his family.

Only the last years he suffered from stomachcancer.
Suddenly also God called him home at the 28th of july 2011.
He was burried in Jakarta.
No matter, who we are:let we never forget this hero of the cultural restoration of the Indonesian kings.Without him we never would be that far as we are
now.
AND SO SAY ALL OF US!!!

May the Good God receive him in the eternal life and send comfort for his family.

Meeting of all rajas of W-Timor

Also in Timor the social resurrection of the local dynasties take place.

A new step in this process is the meeting of all the rajas and many fettors(sub-rajas)of the areas of West-Timor, or Timor Loro Manu.

It will take place;a bit under the support of the provincial government of Nusa Tenggara Timur(NTT);in the compound of the Sonaf Banam, or the palacecompound of Raja Nesy Nope of Amanuban in Niki Niki,not so far from the provincial capital Kupang.

It will take place from 10-12 june.

The first day will be the ceremonial welcome greeting and welcome festivites for all the rajas and fettors and their delegations,the 2nd day will be the conference of the dynasties with the provincial government and some researchers and the 3rd day will be the ceremonial farewell day for all the attending delegations.

It will be an unique royal meeting,that hardly in history has taken place before. It will be very colourfull also,because all the rajas and fettors and their delegations will arrive in the traditional royal and nobility clothes and decorated with the same kind of jewelry.

Timor is known as one of the last placesof Indonesia, where the traditional life is so strong preserved, so it will be a very original cultural event as well.

The event will be organised by the Dewan Usif Timor,or the Council of Rajas of Timor,of which Usif Drs. Theodorus(Olis)Taolin of Insana is the president and Raja Leopold Isu Nisnoni of Kupang;also liurai of Sonbai Kecil is the vice-president.

Of course also the vice-governor of NTT,Fettor Drs. Esthon L. Foenay;the dynastychief of Foenay;a member area of the federal monarchistic area of Kupang, will attend. One of the main issues spoken there at the conference day 11 june is to define again, which dignitaries can be described as rajas, which as sub-rajas,or fettors and the like.

Because of the so-called modern time the functioning of the traditional social system was a bit becoming more vague,so the correct definition of the dignitaries here were not always according the facts.

Of course a social system is never a death,standing still system,but to try to make things for outsiders more understandable every dignitary began to use the title raja,or king for him/herself and the bigger coöperation systems because of that were a little bit pushed aside.

To correct that in good coördination,so to make strong the social systems again for the well-being of Timor and via that for the well-being of Indonesia also of course,they decided to organise this unique meeting.

The last years the traditional,historical grown social systems are rediscovered by the so-called modern world as having also good elements for the well-being of the local population.

To have a more stronger identity and a more harmonious life locally,it will be more easy to find your place in the bigger system of the beloved united republic of Indonesia,so that the words added to the national coat of arms:Bhineka Tunggal Ika:Unity in Diversity;can be better made.

We hope in due time to give you an illustrated info about the meeting of all the dynasties of W-Timor.

Sultan of Banjarmasin promotes Indonesian culture in Europe

On the 25th of may 2011 Holland witnessed a very rare and interesting event:an

Indonesian sultan showed his age-old royal dance- and music culture to the European audience.

On that day the 53th Indonesian Fair in Holland;called Tong Tong Fair;the

biggest Indonesian Fair in Holland with every year ca. 150.000 visitors;was opened with for instance the first of several performances of age-old ceremonial royal dance- and music performances.

It is known,that the Banjarmasin performances in this field are nowadays every genuine and not adapted to the so-called modern taste.

This real culture went directly into the heart of the European audience,because the audience showed a very enthousiatic reaction to it.

Sultan Khairul Saleh of Banjarmasin;also the bupati of Banjar,is already for more than 10 years very busy is trying to revive the Banjarmasin culture in general and the royal culture in special.In that he is very succesfull.He is now also busy in trying to resurrect the last having existed sultan's palace of Banjarmasin.

His total project to promote Indonesian culture in Europe was reasonable effective;also because European people are espacially interested in the old culture and history of Indonesia.

The emeralds,diamonds,original still existing culture,history and culinary traditions were the aspects of Banjarmasin in this promotion project.

Banjarmasin has the potention to become a sort of 2nd Yogjakarta of tourism.

I should add another important aspect of Banjarmasin:honest religious. which not makes them a fundamentalistic people,but a people with love in their heart.

Many people in the world call the Banjarmasin people:the people with love in their heart.

The sultan tried in Holland also to contact the diamondmuseum in Amsterdam(Amsterdam is one of the major diamond business towns in the world and Banjarmasin is the most important diamond and the like areas of Indonesia), the national Holland organisation of nobility(to exchange experiences between Indonesian royalty and European nobility)and cultural institutes.

Besides the sultan and his cultural and royal delegation of 60 people(including his sultana,crownprince,daughter and younger brother),also Pangeran Paku Alam IX of Pakualaman in the Yogjakarta area sended a royal cultural delegation to the Tong Tong Fair.

They also left behind a big impression,which will last because during the whole TTF they will give until 5 june several performances;like the royal Banjarmasin dance- and music group.

It is good to know,that people like Sultan Khairul Saleh of Banjarmasin has now discovered,that half of the potensi of the Indonesian areas for tourism lies in presenting true and original (royal)culture to f.i. the European visitors and in their own areas trying to be strong to stimulate the performance of it.

In the so-called global modern world the people are more and more seeking for local real traditional culture,which contains more the heart and the love of the people.

We shall keep on following the good ideas and projects of Indonesian kings like Sultan Khairul Saleh of Banjarmasin;the bupati of Banjar,who only tries to use the by God given talents to show the pleasure for live in his own general and royal culture.

The government accused snatched Rights Siak Sultanate Grant Heir

Sultan Syarif Kasim II

Siak - Sultanate of Siak Sri Indrapura, has long been a vacuum since Indonesia's independence. Sultan Syarif Kasim II as the last king had long passed away. But now, the treasure he left behind that is the Palace became seizure Limas Siak District Government, and the heirs of the sultan.

What exactly happens with the estate of Siak Sultanate? Siak Palace still stands majestically as mute witness to the triumph of historical evidence of the Sultanate of Siak. Limas Palace stands on approximately 2,000 m2 of land with old building area of about 800 m2. This small palace which is now a bone of contention between Pemkab Siak with stepchildren heirs of Sultan Syarif Kasim II.

Pemkab Siak, accused the family heirs against the law. Basically, the government based on Law No. 5 of 1992 on Cultural Property and Government Regulation No. 6 of 2006 concerning the processing of state property / area. In addition, Pemkab Siak also sued heirs with benchmark Permendagri No. 17 of 2007 concerning the Technical Guidelines for Processing of local property.

"I do not believe it, Pemkab Siak sue us as heirs who occupy Palace Limas. We considered those who oppose the law. The law which our opponent. We occupy this house according to the letter of the sultan grants," said Hashim Syaed stepchild sultan in conversation with the AFP on Thursday (29/04/2001).

Siak Sultanate of property disputes is also now underway in the District Court (PN) Siak. Siak Regency determined to ask the beneficiary to come out of the Palace Limas. In fact, says Hashim, before the Sultan Syarif Kasim II's death, has issued an advance grant for children's stepfather. The letter was issued sultan grants on May 25, 1968.

In a letter of grant, No. B/1/135 / Religion Court when it referred to the Sharia Court of First Level of Pekanbaru, the sultan had donated his property, including property that is the sultan's parents Kasim Sultan Sharif I. The letter explained the grant, Limas Palace handed over to her step children.

Sultan Stepchildren

Regarding the Sultan of Siak stepchild, is not much recorded by history. Sultan Syarif Kasim II listed only married twice. But actually, the sultan had 4 times the wedding. As told by Hashim, originally Sultan Syarif Kasim Sarifah Latifah gain from the Sultanate of Deli, Medan. But in 1929, Sarifah died without leaving descendants. Furthermore, the sultan married the sister of his wife, Tengku Fadhlon.

"His second wife was divorced sultan, as leaving the sultan. His second wife was married to Tengku Mahmud. From this second marriage, the sultan also had no children," said Haysim.

Sultan re-married for the third time with Syariefah Syifah, but got divorced without having children. Sultan married a fourth time, with Syariefah Fadhlun on February 17, 1957 in the Office of Religious Affairs Kampung Melayu, Jatinegara, Jakarta. At that time, the sultan had no longer reigns. Syariefah is a widow with four of Syarief Soud, Syariefah Faizah, Syaed Hashim, Syaed Lukman.

"Although we were a stepchild, but we've seen a child of their sultan. We live in peace with our father who at the end of his life falling into poverty. The evidence we have as children kandunganya, we received a grant from the sultan's treasure one of Limas Palace which is now controlled by the local government would Siak, "said Hashim Syaed.

By Sultan Hashim did escape the attention of the government so that all of life deficiencies. THE PEOPLE OF TOLITOLI STILL LOVES IT'S DYNASTY

Since the decentralisation laws in 1999 in Indonesia several dynasties here not only came back culturally and socially,but several also still seemed to have still strong contacts with their people and were seen as for instance strong identification points for their people and were trusted to be good local rulers.

Of course many dynasties in Indonesia then tried to also to function again politically,but not many for instance present day nominal rajas were succesfull in that. The problem is, that after the Second World War the raja dynasties were a bit seen (but not was) merely to be the aid of the colonial power Holland and also a rajaship was not democratic enough. So theye were pushed aside a bit and at the present time still must be rooted more in the present day political life.

Later the peoples also found out,that the rajasystems had not only it's disdavantages,but also their advantages as being the cultural centre for the local identity and also, when the moral values were used in a good way,had also a sort of democracy in itself and also a listening ear of the raja, or sultan, who could act as a father of his people.
So then it was found, that the modern system and the traditional system could exist next to each other and could enrich each other.

The only really permamant example of a raja,who also was a local highest ruler is in the Yogjakarta special province. Because of the role the former sultan of Yogjakarta and the pangeran of Pakualaman played in the independence struggle they were awarded by a heriditary governor- and sub-governorship.
Of course we also have examples of high princes and even dynastychiefs, who could obtain the local highest rulership. Like in Bima on Sumbawa, where the sultan is also the bupati, or in Banjar(masin), where the chief of the dynasty is also the bupati.
Similar exapmples can be seen in SE Bali recently (kabupaten Badung and the city government of Denpasar), or in the Kabupaten Donggala,where until his death in 2006 the mokole of Banawa was also the bupati.

But only in the area of Tolitoli in Middle-Sulawesi/Sulawesi Tengah the local dynasty plays a similar role in the local government as we can see in the Yogjakarta area.
The Bantilan dynasty of Tolitoli still plays a strong role in the local government.The present bupati;Prince Haji Mohammad Saleh Bantilan;is the son of the present raja:Raja Haji Mohammad Anwar Bantilan.

The story about this remarkable, but outside Indonesia not very known dynasty is like this.
The raja dynasty of Tolitoli (the name derived from a local word meaning three, because the area was formed as a principality by three living peoples here) already ruled here during not a few centuries and delivered in total 28 rulers (the area was also ruled further for short times by regents coming from outside the dynasty).
It all began with Dattu Amas,who was the first ruler of the major people in the Tolitoli area.In the early 19th century a certain Timumun more unified the area and took the name Sultan Jamalul Alam (also known as Sultan Janggu Bantilan Syariful Alam Syah (later the rulers of Tolitoli did not use much often the sultan's title). He is een as a sort of founder of the ruling dynasty in it's present form.
The dynasty already had for a long time a close relationship with the nearby lying principality of Buol;sometimes even a raja of Tolitoli was also a raja of Buol.
The turbulence in the political atmosphere arose,when the greatgrandson of Sultan Jamalul Alam;Raja Haji Abdul Hamid Bantilan(ruling from 1867) died end may 1905.
His son Raja Muda Tegelan Muhammad Ali Bantilan was then already selected as the crownprince, but was considered then to young to become raja.
An uncle then ruled for 13 years.In 1918 the political atmosphere was then a bit changed and the raja said, that he only wanted to abdicate, when his son could become his succesor.There were then 3 pretenders.That son was however killed in 1919.Before he was chief of the local branch of the nationalistic organisation Sarekat Islam, but for the harmony in the area, he gave up that function.The S.I. however then gave a honourary presidency of this S.I. branch to the crownprince, who was still considered by a big part of the people as the actual heir to the throne.
The killed raja (or better chief of the ruling council) had before convinced the crownprince to, lay down his claim for the sake of harmony in Tolitoli.
In may 1919;before the regent was killed, there was a proposal to make the crownprince anyway the raja,but when in a Sarekat Islam incident the regent was killed, Holland did not find it a good idea to go on with the idea of making the crownprince the raja, because of his honourary chief function of the local S.I. and probably more involvements in the local political play.
So then a brother of the regent ruled as raja until he abdicated in 1926.
The crownprince already had died in 1923. Then the eyes of the people and the local Dutch government officials fell on his nephew Prince Mohammad Yahya Bantilan. He was made raja in 1926, but after 3 years it was decided to depose him, because he was considered to be to much nationalistic for the harmony in Tolitoli.
Then the rule was done by a colonial official from outside,who ruled until he was killed in 1942 during some political troubles with a nationalistic atmosphere. Then the Japanese occupation force invited the ex-raja Moh. Yahya Bantilan back to become raja again. In that period he was known as a very nationalistic ruler.
When Holland came back the raja was deposed for a 2nd time.
At that time the nationalistic emotions were very high, but the people were a bit tired of all the struggle and only wanted harmony back in Tolitoli.
A local influential family;Pusadan;then delivered 2 rulers for Tolitoli (regents).
The ex-raja still had a big symphaty in Tolitoli, so on 12-1-1957 he was proclaimed the official traditional (nominal) raja of Tolitoli;so the royal symbol for Tolitoli;as a thanks for his constant nationalistic struggle.

In the modern time Tolitoli and Buol formed a kabupaten(district)together, but in 1999 the central Indonesian governement allowed, that Tolitoli became a seperate kabupaten.
Because of the role Raja Mohammad Yahya Bantilan like the sultan of Yogjakarta had played before, in and after the 2nd World War for the nationalistic cause and because he had always inspirated his in 1942 born oldest son Prince Haji Mohammad Maruf Bantilan to be a good and wise ruler, the reputation of this son was then quite strong in Tolitoli.
In the same year of the decentralisation in 1999,which also meant more freedom for the dynasties to think about installing their own dynastychief again, there was also an election for the bupati of the new kabupaten Tolitoli.Prince Marif bantilan also had worked hard for a seperate kabupaten of Tolitoli. At that time he was also the heir of the raja title of Tolitoli.
But because he wanted to serve his people as bupati, he decided to campaign for the bupati function and gave the raja dignity to his uncle Raja Haji Mohammad Anwar Bantilan, who is still the present raja.
Prince Maruf Bantilan won the bupati election and in 2005 again, so he ruled as bupati until 2010.
His quality as a dedicated ruler already had spread over the province of Middle Sulawesi/Sulawesi Tengah, so he decided now to try to serve his province as a governor.
His cousin;the in 1959 born Prince Mohammad Saleh Bantilan;the son of the present raja, also had the ambition to serve his people as bupati and he already was known then as chief of the local parliament.
Prince Maruf Bantilan was a strong candidate for the governorship of Sulawesi Tengah,but just lost on 6 april 2011 against another strong candidate of the royal blood:Prince Longki Djanggola;a main descendant in the direct line of the mokole's of the important principality of Palu.
Prince Saleh Bantilan was chosen by his people as the new bupati of Tolitoli; an area of 4.079 km2 with in 2008 210.000 inhabitants.

We hope, that this dynasty will be able to serve it's people for a long time.

On the 3rd of april 2011 an extraordinary thing happened near the palace
of an Indonesian king:he made a world record!
Also the first time,that an Indonesian king made a world record.On that day
the charismatic Sultan Mudafar Syah II of Ternate(full title:Sultan Drs.
Mudafar Syah II Masjur Kamo Lano;king since 1975;one of the first kings,who
dared to come forward again fully as a king in modern tme Indonesia)had asked
his people to perform the traditional local dances before his palace at one
time all together to express the gratitude,that he became 76 years on that
day.
Already the sultan of Ternate was known for his courage to perform certain
matters before;really become internationally known a such,when he was in
1987 one of the first of the 300 Indonesian monarchs,who dared to let fully
do the coronation ceremonies for his coronation;a thing before considered
as an unwanted thing from the past.
This year again Sultan Mudafar Syah II organised the Legu Kam royal festival;
a festival taking place from the 1st to the 15th april;celebrating his birthday.
This festival was reorganised since some years,being also a major touristic
happening in the North-Moluccans.
The sultan wanted to do something special now,so he could make it happen,that
on 3 april 2011 8.200 of his people danced at one time for him all in the
clothes of servants of the royal court;partly accompagnied by in the same
royal court manner dressed traditional musicians.All taking place on the
field before the royal palace.
When the dance was finished and all the number of people participating in
the dance were controlled,the sultan and his sultana Dra. Nita Budhi Susanti
Syah could receive an official document from a to the Guiness Book of Records
attached official,that the Sultan of Ternate had broken a world record for
dancing with such a hugue amount of people at one time.
This matter also made a strong point of identity of the Ternate people towards
their king and a good promotion of the North-Moluccan culture internationally.

GRANDSON LAST RULING KING OF PALU BECOMES GOVERNOR OF MIDDLE SULAWESI

Again the present need of Indonesian people to see their need for their local
identity fullfilled again happened on 6 april 2011.Then His Highness Prince
Drs. Haji Longki Djanggola;MSi of Palu,bupati of Parigi Moutong from 2008,was
elected as the new governor of Middle Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tenggah).
Befoe that he was already a settled and experienced politician.
He is coming from the direct line of the magau(raja)dynasty of Palu.
He is the son of Prince Yoto Djanggola,who is the oldest son of Magau Djanggola,who
ruled 19218-died 1945.A son of a younger brother of this raja then was ruling
for a while.The father of Magau Djanggola was Prince Lapariusi,who was the
oldest son of Magau Yojokodi Tomesiema,who ruled 1876-1906.Because Prince
Lapariusi was sick at the time his father died,his younger brother Parampasi
ruled n his place.
The line Magau Yojokodi can be drawn back more generations.Sometimes a sideline
ruled for a while.
One of the fellow candidates of the governorship of Sualwesi Tengah is another
royal bupati of this area:Drs. Haji Mohammad Maruf Bantilan;son of the last
ruling Magau of Toli Toli;MagauHaji Mohammad Yahya Bantilan(1926-29,1944-46,
1957-19..).Although he gave the raja title to his uncle Magau Haji Anwar
Bantilan,because of his political career,he is the actual magau of Toli Toli
and very popular in his area.

Hopefully the new governor will rule with wisdom.

Delayed 36 Years, Coronation of the Sultan of Sumbawa Attended by Thousands

Mataram - Thousands of residents flooded the arena of the coronation of the Sultan of Sumbawa XVII, Daeng Muhammad Abdurrahman Kaharuddin, in Sumbawa Besar, Sumbawa. Coronation was delayed 36 years. This is the sultan's coronation in 80 years.

Marked by the customary coronation procession which started on Monday (05/04/2011) morning. Paraded from the Palace Sultan Yellow Bala, along empress use a litter with yellow decorations, called July. Since early morning, the bell at the palace was struck, marking the traditional start of the procession.

Emperor and empress, Andi Tenri Djadjah Burhanuddin paraded while accompanied by troops armed with a lance and the district chief's palace, with typical tambourine music Sumbawa. Together empress Bala Yellow Emperor out of the palace with readings Shalawat Prophet Muhammad.

Thousands of people thronged both sides of Jl Dr Wahidin and Jl Sudirman, protocol roads sultan's entourage passed. The group moved from the Palace to the Palace of the Yellow Army Loka, wooden palace of the Sultanate of Sumbawa in 1885 made earlier.

In the old palace, the Sultan and Permisuri a short break, before heading to the Great Mosque Nurul Huda, where the coronation took place.

In addition to the community, the coronation ceremony attended by several kings, including King of Denpasar IX, King Niki Niki, South Central Timor, NTT, King of Gowa, South Sulawesi, and also Gusti Hemas Queen of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta.

Governor of NTB, M Zainul Majdi with provincial government officials and the Sumbawa and West Sumbawa regency is also present in the arena of the coronation. Sultanate of Sumbawa includes West Sumbawa and Sumbawa.

In the Great Mosque, the coronation of the sultan was not done by taking the oath, but Sultan recited his oath itself with Arabic Imam witnessed the Great Mosque.

Sultan vowed as a man who was destined as the Sultan. It contained, among others, when the Sultan was not fair then he would be cursed Al Quran 30 Juz. After the oath, the Sultan inaugurated next board Adat Tana Samawa.

Sultan's coronation was the first since 80 years ago. This is the first coronation since the Sultanate of Sumbawa states joined in a united Indonesia. Should the Sultan ascended the throne in 1975 ago, shortly after his father Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin III died. But the sultan's coronation when it was decided postponed.

Sultan spent much time outside the island of Sumbawa. He's a career at Bank Bumi Daya, before it merged into the Bank Madiri. In the state-owned bank, the last Sultan as Executive Vice President, and retired in 1998.

Anthony Brooke, who died on March 2 aged 98, was heir to the throne of Sarawak and briefly ruled the romantic jungle kingdom on Borneo with the powers of the last White Rajah.

Brooke's English family had been the absolute rulers of Sarawak for three generations. Popularly known as the White Rajahs, they had their own money, stamps, flag and constabulary, and the power of life and death over their various subjects – Malays, Chinese and Dyak tribesmen, a few of whom still indulged in the grisly custom of headhunting.

The founder of the Brooke Raj was Anthony's great-great-uncle, James, who in 1839 sailed to the East with dreams of extending British influence throughout the Malay Archipelago. At Singapore, the Governor asked him to take a present to the ruler of Sarawak, then under the suzerainty of the Sultan of Brunei, to thank him for saving some shipwrecked British sailors.

When he got there, Brooke found Sarawak's Dyak tribesmen in revolt against an unfair system of taxation, and by 1841 the desperate ruler was prepared to give him the government and revenues of Sarawak if he could suppress the uprising, which he did.

On his return to London, Brooke was presented to Queen Victoria as Rajah of Sarawak, and knighted. In Sarawak, meanwhile, he won a devoted following with his integrity and frank exuberance. Each day he would stroll about the Malay kampungs, Chinese shophouses and Dyak longhouses, chatting to his subjects, and he was always open to visits at his bungalow. He introduced a just code of laws and enlisted the help of his friend Admiral Henry Keppel to clear up the piracy along Sarawak's coastline.

Among those serving in Keppel's ship, Dido, was James Brooke's nephew, Charles Johnson, who soon entered his bachelor uncle's service and eventually succeeded him as Rajah in 1868, whereupon he took the name of Brooke. A austere character – he deemed jam "effeminate" and replaced his lost eye with a glass one from a stuffed albatross – Rajah Charles nevertheless proved a notably effective and benevolent ruler. He extended Sarawak into the interior (it was eventually the size of England), abolished slavery, rebuilt the capital Kuching and constructed roads, waterworks and even a short railway.

Charles's first three legitimate children all died within a week from cholera while sailing up the Red Sea on their way back to England on leave, but his wife subsequently bore him three more sons, the eldest of whom, Charles Vyner Brooke, known as Vyner, was destined to become the third Rajah of Sarawak. The couple's second son, Bertram, was Anthony's father.

Anthony Walter Dayrell Brooke, always known in his family as Peter, was born on December 10 1912, the fourth child and only son of Bertram and his wife Gladys, the only daughter of Sir Walter Palmer, first and last Baronet – and thus heiress to a sizeable slice of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit fortune.

Anthony's mother was a restless exhibitionist who went through a number of religious conversions. In 1932 she converted to Islam while on a flight from Croydon to Paris, after which she went by the name of Khair-ul-Nissa (Fairest of Women).

She separated from her more retiring husband when Anthony was four but, having produced the longed-for son, remained in favour with her father-in-law, who ordered a 21-gun salute at Kuching when Anthony was born. The old Rajah was far less well disposed towards Vyner's equally flamboyant wife, Sylvia, who managed only daughters.

In the Rajah's political will he bequeathed sovereignty to Vyner but made no secret of his preference for Bertram, who would have to be consulted on any "material developments", and stand in for his brother whenever Vyner was away from the country. After Charles's death in 191, Vyner and Bertram effectively shared power, each spending half the year acting as Rajah in Sarawak.

As for Anthony, he grew up in England, where he was educated at Eton. After a year at Trinity, Cambridge, he studied Malay language and Muslim law at the School of Oriental Studies in London, before travelling for the first time to Borneo in June 1934.

Anthony was seconded to the Malayan Civil Service, serving as an acting resident and magistrate, before returning to Sarawak in 1936. After spells at the outstations of Nanga Meluan and Marudi, and at the Kuching Secretariat, he returned to England in 1938 to study colonial administration at Oxford and complete his grooming as his uncle's heir.

The following year Anthony returned to Sarawak to become district officer at Mukah. Bertram, meanwhile, had become incapable, after a nervous breakdown, of discharging his responsibilities in the power-sharing arrangement with Vyner, and so in April 1939 Vyner appointed Anthony as Rajah Muda (Heir Apparent) and Officer Administering the Government during his annual periods of leave in England.

During his six months in charge of Sarawak, Anthony enacted various education reforms and amended the penal code on whipping, the protection of women and girls and the punishment of mutiny; he also issued a proclamation supporting Britain's declaration of war against Germany and Italy.

Overall he made a favourable impression on the Governor of Straits Settlements, Sir Shenton Thomas, who noted that he seemed enthusiastic to make Sarawak a model state. The Colonial Office, too, felt that here was a man with whom it could do business, unlike the increasingly eccentric Rajah Vyner.

When Vyner returned to Sarawak in 1939 on outbreak of war in Europe, however, he was told by senior members of the Sarawak Service that his nephew had been supercilious, reluctant to take advice and had displayed a tendency to judge officers according to their horoscopes. Anthony had by then left Sarawak to get married and it was on his way back from honeymoon in Sumatra that he heard his uncle had deprived him of the title of Rajah Muda, saying he was "not yet fitted to exercise the responsibilities of this high position".

Ranee Sylvia inferred that part of the problem had been Anthony's marriage to Kathleen Hudden, the "commoner" sister of a Sarawak government official. "I don't like to be snobbish," she told reporters, "but the natives are very particular about these things." The unreliable Ranee later alleged that Anthony had been guilty of folie de grandeur, having cardboard crowns pinned to his car and ordering traffic to draw aside as he approached. Anthony denied this.

The furore eventually subsided, a peace was brokered, and Anthony returned to Sarawak as a district officer in early 1941, and was due to be reinstated as Rajah Muda. However, in September he was again expelled from the country by Vyner, this time for objecting to various aspects of a proposed new constitution. Three months later, in December 1941, Sarawak fell to the Japanese.

By this time, Anthony was back in England, enrolled as a private soldier in the British Army. In 1944, by which time he was on Lord Louis Mountbatten's staff in Ceylon, the British government approached Rajah Vyner suggesting they discuss how Sarawak and Britain might be "marched together in the future".

Reluctant to involve himself in such discussions, Vyner once again turned to his nephew, restoring him again as Rajah Muda, and appointing him head of a Provisional Government of Sarawak in London to explore what the British government had in mind. The talks quickly broke down when it emerged that Britain intended that Sarawak join the Empire, an outcome to which Anthony was vehemently opposed.

Not to be frustrated, the British government made a direct approach after the war ended to the Rajah, and he agreed to cede Sarawak to the British Crown in return for a financial settlement for him and his family. He then wrote to Anthony once again abolishing his title of Rajah Muda.

The cession was put to a vote of the State Council in Kuching, where the majority of the indigenous members voted against it, but it was carried by white government officials loyal to the Rajah. Hence, on July 1 1946, Sarawak became Britain's last colonial acquisition.

There followed a five-year campaign in Sarawak aimed at revoking its new colonial status, which Anthony Brooke helped direct from his house in Singapore. He urged that it be non-violent, but in 1949, after the second Governor, Duncan Stewart, was assassinated by a young Malay, he came under the scrutiny of MI5, who wanted to "get wind of any other plots he and his associates might be hatching". But they turned up no evidence that he had known of the assassination plot.

For his own part, Anthony Brooke was quick to distance himself from the extremists, and when his legal challenge to the cession was finally dismissed by the Privy Council in 1951, he renounced once and for all his claim to the throne of Sarawak and sent a cable to Kuching appealing to the anti-cessionists to cease their agitation and accept His Majesty's Government.

The anti-cessionists instead continued their resistance to colonial rule until 1963, when Sarawak was included in the newly independent federation of Malaysia. Two years later, Anthony Brooke was welcomed back by the new Sarawak Government for a nostalgic visit.

By this time he had embarked on a second career as a self-styled "travelling salesman" for world peace. In the late 1950s, he led a campaign to put morality back into British politics, and in the 1960s he toured the world on a "peace pilgrimage", meeting Nehru, Zhou En-lai and U Nu of Burma, and walking across the Punjab with the Indian saint Vinoba Bhave. He lived with the New Age commune at Findhorn, in the northeast of Scotland, adopting their belief that flying saucers would bring "peace on earth and the brotherhood of man".

After divorcing his first wife in 1973, he married Gita Keiller, from Sweden, 18 years his junior, and together they founded Operation Peace Through Unity, which produced a quarterly newsletter, Many to Many, with "news items, strategies, poems and letters from around the world, for use in the cause of peace, environmental protection and the rights of indigenous peoples".

They continued their globe-trotting campaign until the late 1980s, when they came to roost in a wooden villa on a hill above the town of Wanganui on the north island of New Zealand. Towards the end of his life, Anthony Brooke remained saint-like in his good nature, and remarkably forgiving about those members of his family who had conspired to deprive him of his singular inheritance.

He is survived by his second wife and by a son and a daughter from his previous marriage; another daughter predeceased him.

New royal again candidate for the highest govertment post

Again in one of the areas of Indonesia there is a royal, who is candidate for the highest governmentpost in an area, where his foreathers were before ruling as rajas.
This time it is Tengku Iklik Iljas Leube. He is candidate-bupati of the district of Aceh-Tengah
(Middle-Aceh) for 2012-2017.
His father is Tengku Haji Iljas Leube;a former minister of state and his father is Kejuruen
Sasa Ama-n Thalib, who was from 1929 the last ruling kejuruen,or raja of Linggö/Lingga.
That was a quite important principality in Middle-Acehin the Gayo-Alas area.
Before it was chosen by the sultan of Aceh to be one of his representatives in the area.

The kejuruen dynasty of Linggö is said to be related to the dynasty of the sibayaks of Lingga in the Karo-Batak area, has something to do with the Lingga part of the sultanate of Riau-Lingga and with the little political entity Linggi in Negri Sembilan/Malaysia.

Now he can function again a bit like this.
We will follow with interest this matter.

THE OFFICIAL END OF THE SULTANATE OF ACEH

Until now it was not really clear, when Holland officially had abolished the sultanate of Aceh.
The last ruling sultan of Aceh was Sultan Alauddin Mahmud Syah II, who ruled 1870-1874.
At that time the grip of the once powerfull sultanate on it's vasalstates of the areas outside the Aceh area and also the several so-called uleebalangships, or under-principalities in the actual Aceh area were also not so very strong under the sultan's rule any longer.
Maybe ca. 20% of the ca. 100 Aceh area sub-states only for real still saw the sultan of Aceh really as their paramount overlord.
At that time already Holland tried to seek a form of coöperation with Aceh,but that saw Holland a non-muslim state only as a state of non-believers, which for sure also under which rule you never must come.
Holland had to react to these counter-hostilities under Sultan Alauddin Mahmud Syah II.
This young sultan (born in 1858), who was in fact under the regency of the from Hadramaut/S-Yemen coming religious advisor Habib Abdul Rachman al-Zahr from july 1870 never could really rule himself.
When his palace was occupied and put down on 24-1-1874 they also found out that the minor-sultan with whom they had to sign an agreement of coöperation. had died a few days before.
They decided then to bring more stability to the situation in Aceh, where the sub-states not really followed the sultan anymore then and also because of the very hostile situations before, to take over the ruling responsibilities of the sultan's rule.
This was announced then also in Aceh.
The sub-rajas then not directly selected a new sultan. They first had to decide,if they thought maybe a bit otherwise then the Holand government.
At that time there were several royals, who were candidate to become the new sultan.
Then a young prince was chosen:the grandson of the predecessor of Sultan Alauiddin Mahmud Syah II.I do not think the before as a 16 year old boy-king died royal;Sultan Mahmud Syah II had not a child from his marriage with a certain Pocut Meurah.
The new sultan was Sultan Aluddin Muhammad Daud Syah;also a minor-sultan. He became a sultan first under theb regency of Tuangku Hasjim Bangta Muda (died 1897).
But Holland already had abolished the Aceh sultanate officially.
So in 2024 it will be 150 years ago, that the Aceh sultanate was abolished by Holland.
Sultan Daud;as he was for short known,was taken in captivity and sended to exile on Java from september 1903.There he died 6-2-1939.
At that time and afterwards a bit Holland was thinking of restore the Aceh sultanate also as part of a plan to restore several abolished sultanates and principalities in Indonesia.
(The Aceh dynasty later tried to realise that also under Japanese rule in World War II, without a real strong result).
It was not his crownprince Tuanku Ibrahim (died 1982), who could be the candidate,but a political experienced Aceh prince called Tuanku Mahmud.
The oldest son of crownprince Tuanku Ibrahim;Tuanku Abdul Djalil (very interested and active in researches of the history of Aceh) was not really active with a claim as the chief of the sultan's dynasty of Aceh later.
Tuanku Mirza Keumala, his son;spokesman of the international coördination organisation of rebuilding Aceh,etc. After the Tsunami natural distaster;is seen by some people as the symbol of the sultan's dynasty of Aceh.
The future will tell, how this sultan's dynasty later will find his precious role as at least an identification point of the Aceh people.

Limitations would be placed on the authority of Sultan Hamengkubuwono X should he accept the proposed status of parardhya as stated in the bill on Yogyakarta’s special status, an official says.

The daily work of the administration will be handled by an elected governor.

“[The sultan] will retain the privilege of handling cultural affairs and land matters. The sultan will [handle] all matters outside the administration, so his authority will be limited,” the Home Ministry’s director general of regional autonomy Djohermansyah Djohan said, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Djohermansyah said administrative work would be done by the administration together with the city council. “But, the sultan’s status is higher [than the governor] since the elected governor will be installed by the sultan.”

He said the sultan could run for governor if he wanted to.

“[The sultan] can run in the race, but we’ve never seen a sultan anywhere running for election,” he said.

Djohermansyah said the draft bill would be completed by Monday of next week.

Sultan Serdang;the king of the historians of Indonesia;died.

His father Sultan Sulaiman Syariful Alamsyah of Serdang/East-Sumatra (ruling 1879-1946) was known as the constant rebel, but not as the enemy of the East-Indish Government.
He was known as a principal person,always having full love for his people.
He was succeeded by his brothers T. Rajah Anwar (died 1960) and Tuanku Abunawar (-2001);followed by the greatest historians of Indonesia of the modern time:
Tengku Luckman Sinar;since 22-6-2002 Sultan Bashar Syah II.
Because of being a diaberts he had heartproblems since medio 2010. A few days ago he went in to coma and after much praying by his family and many other people the Almighty and Loving God decided to bring him Home.
he is the symbol of the strict hardworking researches about the royal histories and cultures of Indonesia and what realistic roles it could play in the so-called modern Indonesia.
Until his death he was working hard form that goal.
Spending a lot of his own money to find usefull information and sharing it with others about these matters.
His last big project was making his father Sultan Sulaiman a national hero;not only a hero of the Indonesian freedom, but also because of the love for and dedication to his people.

Like his father he was always complete neutral in all matters.
Always supported by his wife Sultanan Daratul Qamar and his children,who all in their own way chared the love of the history and culture of the Melayu world.
For sure they will be his true succesors in this.

May the King of history of Indonesia of this time;
the Kings of Serdang Sultan Luckman Sinar Basahr Syah II;
has received his Eternal Peace now.

All thoughts go to his kerabat and the people of Serdang.

May as much as possible kings of Indonesia go to his funeral;
to this trully king of the revival of a meaning full royal touch in the so-called modern life of Indonesia.

Coronation Sultan of Sumbawa

H. Daeng MA Kaharuddin officially designated as the Sultan of Sumbawa with the title of Sultan Kaharudin IV. Determination was made through Musakara Rea Institute of Indigenous Tana Samawa 2011 workshop held at the Palace of 8 to 10 January 2011. In this activity all the elements of community representatives from the two districts of West Sumbawa and Sumbawa agree with the proposed DMA Kaharudin as the Sultan of Sumbawa.
Based on the assessment letter inaugural number: 05/MR-LATS/2.1/1432.2011 dated 10 January 2011 or 6 traveling Sultan of Sumbawa in 1432 on the inaugural set, DMA Kaharudin confirmed as the Sultan of Sumbawa with the title Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin IV. In an assessment is also outlined the duties and responsibilities as sovereign among other things, mandated to be able to preserve and develop indigenous tana Samawa, also towards the achievement of tana Samawa religious society, modern and democratic.

Banjarmasin retakes his royal history and culture

From 10-12 december 2010 we saw the accumalation of a cultural revival process,t hat took place in Banjarmasin the last 10 years.
Then the bupati of Banjar was installed as the new raja muda/chief of the sultan's dynasty of Banjarmasin.
This royal installation was characterised by the facts, that really all was wished to be done perfect and complete.
The sultanate of Banjarmasin was abolished after a time of internal struggle on the 11th of june of 1860;so exactly 150 years ago.
Holland reorientated itself about the function of the Indonesian dynasties around 1939 and had then the plan to restore the sultanate of Banjarmasin and the nearby in the so-called Tanah Bumbu-area lying 7 principalities (abolished from 1905); strongly related to the Banjarmasin dynasty.
But the realisation of the plan was hampered by the WW II and the then following independence struggle in Indonesia.
The once very influential dynasty of Banjarmasin;being then one of the 5 main dynasties of the island of Kalimantan/Borneo;had always preserved as good as possible it's cultural heritage and knowledge of it's history.
The present dynastychief;then still called Gusti Khairul Saleh;was in 2000 still a high governmentofficial in the town of Banjarmasin,but then already had organised an organisation to preserve the cultural and historical heritage of the total Banjarmasin area.
It even published then already it's own magazine.
Also the fact, that the people of Banjarmasin;known for it's pietist religious life and the with that connected friendliness;kept their interest in the history, fascilitated the cultural revival of the area.
Yes, Unity in Diversity is the slogan of the coats of arms of Indonesia (Bhineka Tunggal Ika), so a more stronger sense of your own local culture means, that you also can stay more strong towards the national cause.
That was also the aim, that the sultan's dynasty and the local government had in the royal installation project.
Everything during these 3 days were perfect and complete.
Not only there were genuine installationceremonies,but also an unique photoexhibition of Indonesia kings in history. That also gave a good chance to all the people there to be educated about their own history.
That exhibition was sponsored by the National Council of Dutch Nobility (Nederlandse Adels Vereniging), who together with the European Union of National Nobility Councils (Cilane) has a project to exchange experiences with the Indonesian dynasties about their function in the so-called modern world and where it is possible to further support each other.
Very active for years in this project was their much active representative Drs. Ferdinand F. Baron de Smeth van Alphen, who was this year represented at this royal event by the in Holland based secretary of a documentation institute about the dynasties of Indonesia
(Pusaka);Mr. Donald Tick and by Drs. Gusti Yulianitha Tick;a direct descendant of the last locally recognized ruling sultan of Banjarmasin (Sultan Adam).
The in Indonesia still very lifely traditional culture and relative active functioning of the local royalty is a stimulating factor for the European nobility .
The very detailed archives and the philisophy of the European nobility about their functioning in the so-called modern world is a factor of learning also for the since ca. 10 years really cultural reviving of the Indonesian dynasties.
The perfect way, how the royal installation had been done can be described as an example for such matters in Indonesia.
The different branches of the dynasty with equal rights to the dignity of chief of the dynasty were also asked for some advise and also invited. All came.Also the general traditional and religious leaders and of course the civil government were asked for advice and invited.
Even a branch of the dynasty,living in Holland;was invited.
Because Banjarmasin was lying on an island (relative isolation) the history of Banjarmasin mainly happened on the island of Kalimantan, or Borneo.
So;much royal intermarriages and political bonds were made in history. Even some other principalities on the island were founded by sons of Banjarmasin sultans.
That is why the whole organisation first concentrated concerning the invitations to invite as much as possible the royal and princely families of the island itself. But of course also many dynasties, who represented the other ca. 250 dynasties of Indonesia.

Because it was already 150 years ago, that the dynasty really functioned as a ruling dynasty, the related dynasty of Kotawaringin (S-middle Kalimantan;founded by a son of a sultan of Banjarmasin), who functioned as a ruling dynasty until the end of active existence as such in the Dutch time(ca. 1949)was asked to control the plans for the installation.
And even really participated in the actual royal installation.
It was all a colourfull, interesting and quite elaborate royal cultural event, who was attended by a lot of dynasties from Indonesia,Malaysia and Brunei.
So you could see a diversity of displays of royal culture as well like the dynasties of Bulungan, Sambaliung, Gunung Tabur and Kutai (East-Kalimantan), Kotawaringin (S-middle Kalimantan), Tayan (representing the council of monarchs of West-Kalimantan, who were at that time very busy with their own cultural festival), Mamuju and Binuang from West-Sulawesi, Buton from SE-Sulawesi, Sanrabone from SW-Sulawesi, Badung-Pemecutan from Bali, Sile Dendeng from Lombok, Surakarta and Pakualaman from Java, Siak from East-Sumatra, Palembang from S-Sumatra, a representative of the S-Moluccan areas nobility in the person of the raja of Mamala, etc.,etc.
The Malaysia royal world sended a delegation from the sultan's dynasty of Selangor (founded by a prince from the Sulawesi kingdom of Luwu) and also the sultan's dynasty of Brunei was represented.
The whole installation project was also supported by the Indonesia organisation of representation of the Indonesian dynasties FSKN (Forum Silaturahmi Keraton se Nusantara) under the hardworking leadersship of Kanjeng Pangeran Haryo Gunarso Kusumodingrat;known generally as Pangeran Gunarso.
The present dynastychief of Banjarmasin;Pangeran Khairul Saleh,is a good person for the dignity of chief of the sultan's dynasty of Banjarmasin in this so-called modern time.
Being descendant of the brother of Sultan Adam (the last local recognized real ruling sultan) and married with a descendant of a Banjarmasin sultan as well,he already has the royal charisma(also not unimportant in Indonesia).
That combined with his true idealism to revive the love for the local culture and history he must be the good man/royal on the right place.
Most of the people are convinced of his honest and non-proud intentions towards it.
It is hoped,that the good God will preserve his total idealism in this way.
His next step in his realistic dreams is to rebuild the sultan's palace as a symbol of the local culture,but also as a eyecatcher for tourists.
The palace must be finished in 2011.
That is of course also to the interest of the Indonesian central government,who more and more has focussed themselves to the local culture as one of the main interests for the tourists. So hereby tourists can play a role in reinforcing the local feeling for it's own culture in a genuine way.

Mr. Jero Wacik;Indonesian minister of tourism and culture was because of all of that togerther with Governor Rudy Arifin of South-Kalimantan some of the most important guests at the events.

Hopefully this inspiring line will be followed in the general and royal cultural revival.

Sultan of Jailolo (North-Moluccans) deposed

Recently the news reached us,that one of the 4 sultans of the North-Moluccan;Sultan Abdullah Syah of Jailolo;has been deposed by his paramount overlord Sultan Mudafar Syah II of Ternate.
That happened 20-11-2010.
The story is like this:
Before Jailolo was an independent kingdom.
Ca. 1550 Jailolo came under the influence of Ternate. One source said,that the last descendant of the kings of Jailolo (then called a raja) died in exile on Ternate in 1715.
But the members of the direct line, or the Doa line claim, that with that fact the rights to the throne of Jailolo had not been ended. From 1715 the rights to the raja title went to a side line. From there the rulers of the restored Jailolo sultanate descended:Raja Muhammad Arif Bila, who helped ca. 1800 the rebellious Sultan Nuku of Tidore;a national Indonesian hero and later after him his 2 sons, who only could rule over a segment of the Jailolo people, who were allowed to resettle themselves in the north part of Ceram and after the last sultan of jailolo there was deposed went back to Jailolo in Halmahera totally.
The last sultan there was deposed 1832 (Sultan Muhammad Asgar;died 1839),because he not really coöperated with ending the piracy in the area. A descendant from that line;Dano Baba Hasan;was pretender sultan 1875-76 and his descendant;Dano Jaeuddin;also was pretender in 1914.
A descendant of Dano Baba Hasan was discovered in in Sumatra by Sultan Mudafar II Syah. He had a plan to make the system of 4 kings/Maloku Kie Raha;of again functioning to give stability again to the area.
So in januari 2002 Sultan Abdullah Syah was installed by the sultan of Ternate as a sultan, but in fact the paramount function of Ternate over Jailolo had not been ended then.
So in fact it was more a coöperation between the 2 sultan systems.
That functioned very good for a long time,but this year the sultan of Jailolo had a different choice for a bupati of a local district and that was not very much liked by the sultan and sultana of Ternate,who felt a sort of betrayed.
After the sultan of Jailolo was deposed, the functions were temporarily taken by an official called Ilham Dano Tokan.
No further real developments were noticed in this matter.

Some say, that the branch of the dynasty of which he belongs were always a bit seen as the Tidore branch. Tidore is in history the rival of Ternate.
Sultan Muhammad Arif was also pretender to the sultan's title of Tidore later.
The Doa line now hope, that there will be a chance to reclaim with succes their own rights to the sultan's title.

Banjarmasin dynasty also has now it's chief again

The Banjarmasin area;once one of the 4 biggest kingdoms on the island of Borneo/Kalimantan has witnessed from 10-12 december 2010 the installation of it's new dynastychief;150 years after the Banjarmasin sultanate was abolished 11-6-1860.
The new dynastychief is Pangeran Khairul Saleh, who is now also having his 2nd term of office as bupati/districtchief of Banjar;the central part of Banjarmasin.
Not only the Indonesian government sended high officials for this royal installation like the minister of Culture and Tourism Mr. Jero Wacik, but also Governor Rudy Arifin of South Kalimantan (the province in which the kabupaten Banjar is lying) and other high local government officials were attending.
Apart from the civil government also many dynasties (as representatives of the dynasties of their areas) attended.
Also the chief of the council of South-Moluccan nobility clans were attending.
Of course the several branches of the sultan's dynasty itself was invited and all attended.Even the clan formed by the descendants of a son of the last sultan of Banjarmasin and a Dutch woman were to be seen at the ceremonies.
This Holland prince of Banjarmasin;Mister Dick Eysma from Kota Zoetermeer;went back again to the place, which he had seen for the last time 29 years ago.Then also he made a journey to commemorate his royal ancestors in the area where he was born 69 years ago and which he left in 1948.

The ceremonies took place in 3 days. The first day was concentrated on the baduduk, or ceremonial ritual cleansing ceremonies for the dynastychief and his most closest dynastic officials.
The 2nd day was concentrated around the arriving and greeting welcome of the high civil politicians and the dynasties from Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.
The 3rd day the actual installation and also the official confirmation of the pangeran title took place.
That last day was of course the most colourfull and intensive cultural event.
Also a little historical photo exhibition;sponsored by the Holland National Council of Nobility (Nederlandse Adels Vereniging);was then opened.
That organisation is normally represented at such royal occasions by Drs. Ferdinand F. Baron de Smeth van Alphen from Amsterdam,whose National Council of Dutch Nobility is trying to exchange experiences with the Indonesia royalty about their functioning in the so-called modern-time.
Because of health reasons the baron was represented by Gusti Yulianitha Tick from Balikpapan (descendant of the last local recognized ruling sultan of Banjarmasin;Sultan Adam Alwatzikubillah (1827-1857), who is also the wife of Donald Tick, the secretary of the Documentation Centre of the Indonesian Dynasties (Pusat Dokumentasi Kerajaan2 di Indonesia "Pusaka",who organised the exhibition.

Later,when the more detailed information about this 3 day royal installation will reach us together with the beautifull pictures around this important event, we shall put another article here about it.

Buton the new host of FKN VIII royal festival in 2012

On the 28th of november 2010 during one of the royal festivals of Indonesia;the Festival Keraton Nusantara VII in Palembang,which took place from 26-28 november;Sultan La Ode Muhammad Izat Manarfa has been chosen as the host of the next FKN in 2012.
So it will take place at a later defined date in the city of Baubau;the former capital of the Buton sultanate.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono also of royal blood

Before I always thought, that the present president of Indonesia;President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono;was the first real civil president;besides the so-called interim presidents President Abdurrahman Wahid (of a clan of religious leaders) and President Bacharuddin Yusuf Habibi (of a family related to South-East Sulawesi royalty).

But now I discovered, that the present Indonesian president is also of royal blood.
Maybe he do not use his nobility title Raden because he wants to profile himself as a real civil president.
His in 2001 died father (the president is the only child) was the military officer Letnan Raden Soekotjo,who married for the 2nd time with Siti Habibah from Blitar (same area, where president Sukarno comes from);the daughter also of a military officer.
Raden Soekotjo lived since 1930 in Pacitan;the area,where his clan comes from. In the there lying city of Ardjosari (capital of the sub-district of of Tegalambo) Raden Susilo Bambang Yudhyono was born at the 9th of september 1949;109 days before Indonesia received it's complete independence from Holland.
The father of Raden Soekotjo was Raden Imam Badjoeri and this nobleman was a son of Raden Kasanpuro,who was a naib, or penghulu (religious leader) in Ardjosari.
Pacitan was before a part of the empire of Surakarta.
This Penghulu Raden Kasanpuro was a descendant of Pangeran Buwono Keling of the Majapahit dynasty (who before in name ruled the total area of Indonesia) and his wife Raden Mas Kustiloh,who was the direct descendant of a Bendara Raden Ayu,so high royal daughter of Sultan Hamengku Buwono III of Yogjakarta(ruled as Prince-regent 1810-6-11-1811 and kept that title until 6-11-1812;then from 1812-died 3-11-1814 sultan
(born ca. 1770).
So after the first president of Indonesia;President Achmed Soekarno,who was via the father side descendant of an emperor of Majapahit and via the mother's side belonging to to the Bali nobility and even had as one of his wives a princess of Bolaang-Mongondow (Manoppo dynasty/in North-Sulawesi) and the second president President Suharto (who via his mother Sukirah was a descendant of Sultan Hamengku Buwono V of Yogjakarta 1822-26/28-55;he looks very much like this sultan) married a princess of Mangkunegaran in the Surakarta area;now we have a 3rd long ruling Indonesian president, who has his roots in the Indonesian royal families.

That he will continue to rule his people like a good thing;that means a true caring father of his people. Until now he shows much of that talent.

The host wil be Sultan Iskandar Mahmud Badaruddin of Palembang (one of the 2 sultans here) and the local government.

The festival is organised by 4 of the 5 royal organisations in Indonesia;namely:
Forum Informasi dan Komunikasi Keraton Nusantara(FKIKN), Asosiasi Kerajaan dan Kesultanan Indonesia(AKKI), Forum Kerajaan dan Kelembagaan Adat Sulawesi (FKKAS;a royal organisation focussed namely on the Bugis,Makassarese and Mandar area on Sulawesi),
and Forum Silaturahmi Keraton Nusantara(one of the 2 organisations with that name).

The festival;a display of culture and history of Indonesia;a country with ca. 300 imperial, royal and princely dynasties;will last from 26-28 november and will be for the most part open for the general public.
Such royal festivals are very unique matters in Asia and has a stimulating effect on the consousness of the people of Indonesia for their own local culture in this so-called modern time.

American high computer specialist becomes King in Indonesia

On the 19th of november 2010 a man of Indonesian origin was coronated as the 21th Sultan of Bacan;an Indonesian island group in the North-Moluccans. Sultan Dede Muhammad Gary Ridwan Sjah.
His father Sultan Alhaji Dede Muhammad Gahral Adian Sjah was sultan of bacan from 1983 until he died 21-9-2009. He was also the districtchief (Bupati) of Central-Halmaherah.
The son of this sultan already went at a young age to the USA and could make there a quite succesfull career as an computer specialist;now living in the state of Ohio.
Because his father the deceased sultan was quite loved by his people, they asked him to become their new king.
In the beginning he thought, that would be quite a problem to combine his high job in tne USA with his dignity as king of Bacan.
The sultanate of Bacan is not an automatic from father to son monarchy, but an elective monarchy,where the 4 royal clans elect from within the dynasty a good candidate for the throne.
The new sultan however already was known as a quite loving and caring prince for the Bacan people,so the local nobility insisted, that he would become their new king.
The new sultan is also known for his quite humbkle acting, so immediately he is now loved by his people.
After Sultan Dede Muhammad Gary Sjah was coronated with the centuries old crown and given the very old royal digity stick with golden knob in his hand (Tongkat Sultan)he was declared as the 21th sultan of Bacan.
Before Sultan Zainal Abidin Sjah was made before 1512 the 1st sultan of bacan, there were already non-muslim kings in Bacan,which once was seen as the most important kingdom in the North-Molccans and even in the total Moluccans,with even influence in the the Papua areas.
After the coronation the sultan,who is married with the also of course attending Sultana Boki Winy Sjah;returned to the USA. In the mean time the royal court organised the big festivites and royal reception for a later date,which would be attended by many king and rajas of Indonesia.
That the Almighty and Loving God will help this good sultan of Bacan to lead his people.

Sultana Maharatu Mas Makhota of Pontianak*

On the 19th of june 2010 the last Dutch woman, who ever was queen of one of the 300 principalities of Indonesia died at the respectable age of 95.
It was Sultana Maharatu Mas Makhota of Pontianak, who was the wife of Sultan Syarif Muhammad Hamid II Alkadrie,who ruled 1945-1950(/3).
She was born 5-1-1915 in a plantantionfamily;but also already with a slight amount of royal blood in her,because her forefather was the adatuang (raja) of Sidenreng in SW-Sulawesi:La Wawo (ruled 1831-1837).
In the end of the 1930-ies she married the young prince Pangeran Syarif Hamid Alkadrie,
who then was the 2nd in line in the succesion of his father.
She begot 2 children, of which only a son Max Yusuf Alkadrie is still alive.
After the Japanese had murdured in 1944 many royals of West-Kalimantan, she became to her surprise in 1945 suddenly queen of Pontianak, when her husband was chosen as new sultan of Pontianak on 23-10-1945.
In the difficult time after the Indonesian independence declaration and before, that Holland gave total independence to Indonesia, the sultan sended his family to Holland for safety reasons and they never returned permamently to Indonesia.
During the difficult time for her husband (he was falsely accused of treason and after his release he was again in the 1960-ies sended to the prison for so-called rebellion), she always supported him and also never forgot Pontianak. Many things she did with the help of Dutch investors.
Her husband died 30-3-1978 and they always kept a high respect for each other.
Until very high age she always kept her interest in Indonesia and this high respectable and intellectual wife, who always had a mild effect on the Asian temperament of her husband, was rewarded with a statue in the garden of the sultan's palace.

Not only because of the status of her husband,but also because of her character, she was maybe one of the best known Dutch queens in Indonesia.

Timor is known as an island where the traditional social systems are one of the best preserved of Indonesia.
The middle part of Timor is known as the most traditional of the total island and of this area the north part of this area;known as the Belu area;is the more traditional than the s part of Belu.
One of the principalities there is the principality of Naitimu.Now lying in the sub-district, or kecamatan of Nanaet Dubesi.
In 2000;when the chances changed for the Indonesian dynasties to really come back in the social system,also in Belu plans were made for the official selection and installation of the several rajas of the area.
Belu is known as the area,where the Maromak Oan,or Emperor of Belu and theoretically of total Timor is living.He lives in S-Belu.
Because of some political facts then this selection of the rajas of Belu was more or less delayed for several years.
In the north part they know for instance the dasi ran principle.A raja must be a full blooded royal,or as much as possible.
That was still the case,when in 1878 Raja Taek Mauk of Naitimu in north Belu died and the full-blooded royal line could not be continued anymore. In the south of it lying Fialarang federation there were still full blooded,or dasi ran persons,so a request was made to Loro Atok Lulin of Fialarang to be able to adopt his son Prince Fahi Mauk as their new raja. That was accepted. Already the dynastic marriage contacts had existed before here.
When this raja died in 1890 he did not had children from his royal wife,so again a dasi ran prince had to be requested from a dynasty. Then a son of the Raja of Lidak and the Ratu of Jenilu (both nearby Naitimu) was allowed to be adopted as the new raja. This Raja Don Basenti da Costa ruled until his death in 1914.
Because he was in 1890 only 7 years old and his family wanted,that he had to finish f.i. his school first,a son of Raja Fahi Mauk from a not full-blooded royal wife,but nobility wife,
was installed as one of the regent-rajas of Naitimu with name Fettor (ruler's title) Yoseph Atok.
He ruled without complaints from anyone until 1894, when the new raja was installed.
This raja also had no children from his dasi ran wife, so again there would be a difficult situation.
But in 1914 Holland already had decided to take care more of the political situation on Timor for ca. 9 years and with them the contacts the missionaries could make with the local royalty and people had augmented.

This raja was known as a very wise man.In the 2nd World War many rajas of Timor suddenly went to the Japanese side.For a part because of fear.
But Raja Frans Manek already had experienced the good things also Holland had brought to his area and decided to fight with his people as one of the 2 rajas in the Belu area for the Dutch cause in 1942.For that he became a very well-known raja.
He died in 1953 and was succeeded by Raja Balthasar Th. Siri.
But already at that time the younger brother of Raja Frans Manek;Prince Vicentius Mauk Atok;worked hard to stimulate his people to try to make their lives still better.
Even today the young people still talk about this prince,who dedicated his life for the well-being of Naitimu.
Raja Balthasar Th. Siri died 4 july 2001;being 88 years old.

After a selection time the royalty,nobility;with the consent of the people of Naitimu; decided to ask the grandson of the very popular Prince Vicentius Mauk Atok to be their new raja. This Prince Vicentius Rodriques Manek (born in 1969) already was then known as a prince with the same dedication and love for his people as his grandfather.
During a 3 days series of ceremonies and festivities;from the 5th until the 7th of june 2007; Raja Vicentius Rodriques Manek was installed as the new Raja,or Ama Nai Nanaet Dubesi by Raja Hendrik Tefa of nearby brother area of Mandeu.
The new Ratu of Naitumu is Ratu Florentina Christianti Manek;SH and the new crownprincess their oldest daughter Ratu Muda Elisabeth Oktaviani Manek.
No negetative emotions were shown at these solemn ceremonies.
They very much like,that the raja always socializes with his people.
This raja also comes from a long line of very important rajas from the principality of Fialarang.The first ruler of his dynastic clan:his greatgrandfather Raja Fahi Mauk(ruled 1878-1890)was the dasi ran son of the 11th loro of Fialarang:Loro Don Anthony Atok Lulin
(already known as crownprince of Fialarang in 1818).
The raja is proud about his history and culture and shares it with everyone.
Besides his duty as raja of Naitimu,he works in the network marketing business locally.

Royals of the Savu-islands try to come back in power

South-west of the islands of Timor are lying the little archipelago of the Savu-islands.
Already in Dutch time it was a bit an isolated area, because of being less economical interesting and because it was not always easy in the old times to reach the area.
Nowadays;however;it is still remaining as one of the last remaining Indonesian areas, where the local culture remained unspoiled relatively.
The archipelago consists of 5 former principalities:Seba, Messara, Timu, Liae (on the main island) and the island of Raijua.
Together with the eastwards of it lying Rote archipelago it belonged to the kabupaten (district) Kupang on Timor in the modern time.
Some years ago Rote became an independent kabupaten, but Savu still remained with Kupang.
But also on this islandgroup the need to be a seperate kabupaten already was growing more and more and that resulted in the foundation of the kabupaten Sabu Raijua on the 29th of october 2008.
And with that event the royals of Savu also came back more and more in the local government. Before the relative isolated islands were ruled by rajas,or doae's,but the former religious rulers of the islands were still powerfull.
So not like on Timor and Rote, where the community development had been crystylized in a way, that the former wordly representatives of the religious rulers became the real rulers of the islands.
So after the Indonesian independence in 1945/49 the raja-dynasties of Savu were not rooted so strongly in the area as the raja dynasties of the nearby islands. So in fact still being in the process of rooting.
When the new kabupaten Sabu Raijua was founded 29-10-2008 the bupati ad-interim became Thobias Uly;a person, who had blood ties with the Fettor-Raja Tanya dynasty of Timu.
In december 2010 the election for a new bupati and vice-bupati of the archipelago will be held and it can be seen clearly, that the dynasties of the archipelago try to come back in the local government.
There are 3 pairs of future rulers for these government posts. In 2 of it 3 dynasties are represented.
In one of the teams to become bupati and vice-bupati we see Pieter Djamu Rebo with his vice-bupati running mate Dr. Origenes M. Boeky;nephew of the dynastychief of Messara:
Raja Muda Ferdinand H. Boeky.
The 2nd team is made up of Atu Radja Pono;direct descendant of Raja Elias Ludji Radja Pono of Seba (the biggest area of the archipelago;having ruled 1901-1906) and his vice-bupati running mate Dr. Bernhard Tanya;son of the last ruler of Timu;Fettor-Raja Saul We Tanja Ludji (1910-1950-ies) and brother of the last crownprince of Timu;Raja Muda Samuel Tanja, who also was before an important national politician.

All of these royals have sufficient local political experience.
We are waiting with anxious feelings, what will be the outcome of this election of one of the last areas in Indonesia, where the royalty come back in the local politics.

On 6 and 7 march the many dynasties and ruling families members of the Forum Silaturhami Keraton se Nusantara;one of the leading royal organisation of Indonesia, came together in Jakarta for a conference about the preservance of the age old culture (and history) of the dynasties amongst others.

It was good to see, that still these respected persons try to find the strength to work for this important goal.
Although there are several organisations of representation of the dynasties and ruling families in Indonesia, it is good to see,that these organisations still try to find some ways to keep contact with each other.
One of the themes during these days was the royal wedding culture of Indonesia.
In october 2010 the 2nd Indonesian Royal Palace Festival will take place in Jakarta, for which also representatives of European national nobility organisations showed interest.
These organisations have a big interest to exchange experiences as royalty/nobility in the modern time with the Indonesian royalty.

We wish them all strenght because of the Blessings of the Loving God.

The Tomundo of Banggai;one of the 3 boy-kings of Indonesia

The principality in NE Sulawesi already exists as an united principality for ca. 410 years. It was founded by a son of the Javanese sultan of Banten, or by a representative of the sultan of Ternate. Maybe he was both.
For a long time Banggai;ruled by a raja with the title Tomundo,was under the influence of the sultan of Ternate in the N-Moluccans, but in ca. 1900 it was made totally independent from Ternate by Holland.
Mostly the Tomundo was chosen by the royal election council;a body of 4 members;from a certain line.
When Tomundo Haji Awaluddin died in 1939 after having been tomundo for 15 years his son Raja Muda Jaida was to young to succeed, so an important prince became a sort of raja in between:Raja Haji Sukuran bin Aminuddin Amir. This raja ruled until 1955 and was raja one way or another active until 1959. His son Raja Muda Muhammad Chair Amir (RM Hideo Amir) was from 1987 on the main representative of the dynasty.In 2008 the grandson of the oldest son of Raja H. Awaluddin was selected as new tomundo;the 22th;of Banggai.
At 16-1-2008 this raja was installed:Tomundo Ir. Haji Iskandar Zaman Awaluddin;SH.
He did much for the identity of Banggai.
He was very much respected and loved by the people of Banggai.
He died suddenly 27-1-2010.
One of the royal organisations of Indonesia did a lot to let the succesion of him happen in full harmony.
So later the oldest son of the deceased raja could be selected and recognized as the 23th tomundo of Banggai:Tomunda Muhammad Fiqran Ramadhan Iskandar. He now is raja under the regency of the younger brother of his father Raja Muda Irawan Zaman Awaluddin.
The boy-king of Banggai is 17 years old and one of the youngest kings of Indonesia.
The other boy-kings are the sultans of Deli (E-Sumatra) and of Sambas (W-Kalimantan).
The dynasty is still working hard to make verything very perfect in the dynastic network.

Tidore (North-Maluku) has New Palace

Tidore, KOMPAS - Sultan Tidore 36th, Djafar Sjah, began living in kadaton-called Java-once the palace of the building was completely built in March 2010 in the City Tidore, North Maluku. This new history for the Sultanate Tidore for nearly a century old has not Tidore kadaton.

Sultan Tidore Djafar Sjah, Sunday (28 / 3), said the development of new kadaton start was made in 1997 by the government. Because of limited funds allocated each year, phased construction and newly completed mid March 2010.

"Building kadaton kadaton made similar to the original building by looking at pictures ever made when it is colonizing the Netherlands and other historical evidence," he said.

After kadaton completely built, the Sultan and the Sultanate of customary holders Tidore, March 17 and then, spreading crown sodoro rituals, which transfer the crown of the Sultan to kadaton. Previously, the crown kept in museums in Tidore.

"The Emperor and the crown are two forces that are not integral. Therefore, both must be in its rightful place, namely in kadaton, "observers said the history of the Sultanate of Tidore, Lahman Saleh.

Kadaton building is a building that formerly was built in the reign of Sultan Muhammad Muttahiddin (1811-1831) in 1812. It takes about 50 years to complete the construction of which was given the name kadaton Kadato this Kie, or about the year 1861.

Muttahiddin post-Sultan, the sultan of development followed two successors, namely Sultan al Mansyur Ahmadul Mansyur Chalifahtullah Sirajuddin (1831-1856) and Sultan Ahmad Syaifudin (1856-1865).

The last sultan who occupy kadaton is Qawiuddin Syahdjuan Sultan Ahmad (1894-1905). Post-coup Sultan Syahdjuan inter-child descendant of Sultan for seven years. This condition is exploited by the Dutch colonizers direct lift of an emperor.

Prime Minister of the Sultanate of Tidore Nau Tjenge who holds the government at that time have destroyed kadaton as a form of resistance against Dutch colonial policy.

Pay officers kadaton

In sodoro ritual crown, the sovereign is not allowed to leave kadaton for 44 days. Every Sunday night and Wednesday night, the sovereign must remembrance praised room, where the crown is stored in kadaton.

Lahman Saleh added that the existence of kadaton and return the crown to the sultan and the momentum of rise kadaton Tidore Sultanate. "Ritual and other traditions that have long since have strived to be raised again so that citizens know their heritage and the positive values of each tradition," he said.

Djafar Sjah said, it could be performed if there is support from government funds. "Currently, we are still puzzled how to employ the officers in kadaton because there are no funds allocated," he said. (APA)

Siak; a Major Power on Sumatra

Before the sultanate of Siak was one of the major powers in the East/N-part of Sumatra for a long time. Several small and little principalities were under it's sway. Later these all became independent, but always respected the historical position of the sultan of Siak.

Espacially the sultanate of Aceh was also an important player in the search for control of the area.

The last ruling sultan of Siak;Sultan Abdul Jalil Saifuddin V(rule (1908-)1915-1946); also known as Tengku Syarif Kassim II, ruled in a much turbulent time. In the independence struggle around WW II he was an important defendant of Indonesian independence.
Because of that he was made a national hero of Indonesia in 1998.
He died in 1968 and left no royal heirs. His brother had sons,but not from a royal wife.
So for a long time there was no official dynastychief of Siak.Some years ago that was changed.
The last ruling sultan was descendant of Sultan Abdul Jalil Saifuddin III( T. Sy. Kasim I;ruled 1864-88). This sultan had succeeded his older brother Sultan Abdul Jalil Saifuddin II(Raja Ismail),who ruled from 1827 and had to stop as sultan, because of his health.
Now the line of Sultan Abdul Jalil Saifuddin III/Sy. Kasim is extinct, the dynasty decided to continue with the line of his older brother.
The present chief of the sultan's dynasty of Siak is Haji Tengku Muhammad Muchtar Anum Raja;greatgrandson of the foremost last mentioned sultan, who is also described as Sultan Syarif Ismail Abdul Jalil Syafuddin II.

Siak is one of the important centres of East-Sumatra culture.

Main Palace of the Emperor of Minangkabauw burnt down on 21th March, 2010

Some disasters are following the last time the Imperial dynasty of Minangkabauw,or Pagaruyung in West-Sumatra.
On 27-2-2007 THE symbol of Minangkabauwculture;but not the main palace of the imperial dynasty of Minangkabauw;the Istano Basa Pagaruyuang was burnt down.
At this moment the rebuilding activities are nearly finished so the new palace at Batusangkar could be reopened with big festivities. A joy for the Minangkabauw area and also of Indonesia in general a bit,because this palace is seen culturally as one of the main palaces of Indonesia.
But at 01.00 A.M. the main palace of the Imperial dynasty of Minangkabauw, or Pagaruyung;the Istano Silindung Bulan;also at Batusangkar;was burned down and now there were very strong proofs that is was set onfire.
The from wood built very traditional palace was burned down totally.
There are rumours going on now in all kind of networks on internet for instance,that it was done,because of a rivalry inside the network involved with traditional matters in the area,which would like to see promoted the nearlty rebuilt palace Istano Basa Pagaruyuang; a museum; as the main palace of the area,instead of the Istano Silindung Bulan.

We hope, that matters will be come to total harmony again.

Very rare flower grows near royal graves(Selimbau)

In the life sometimes you can see very extraordinary matters, which you can not explain at all. We only can see it then as one of the many miracles of God.
One of it is the place, where the legendary black orchid is growing.
For lovers of orchids the name black orchid is a very legendary one. Does it really exists, or not?
In 2007 2 people from the district of Kapuas Hulu in West-Borneo (West-Kalimantan) found these very beautifull flowers.
The men;called Uju Suharman and Abeng;founded the flowers growing near the royal graves of the rajas of the very ancient kingdom of Selimbau.
They were stunned by their beauty and talked about it to a youth leader in Selimbau called Mr. Muhamad Walidad.
He to went to the area,where the flowers are growing;an area of ca. 5 ha near the graves of the royal family of Selimbau;besides also growing on nearby lying trees.
Then he went to the government of the district of Kapuas Hulu and also there were talks with the traditional leaders of Selimbau and of course also with the nominal king of Selimbau:Raden Muhammad Asbi Assidiqi. He is the grandson of the last ruling raja of Selimbau:Pangeran Gusti Haji Muhammad Usman, who died in 1925.
Then the chief of the district;the bupati:Bupati Drs. Abang Tambul Husin (a local royal too),
the local king:Raden Muhammad Asbi Assidiqi, local traditional and community leaders came together end 2008 for an important meeting, what important measures there had to be taken to protect this very rare and very beautifull (and very legendary) black orchid;growing near the royal graveyard of the rajas of Selimbau.
It then was declared, that the area would be a special protected area under strict protection from the government. Stealing of the flowers would be punished with very heavy fines per flower.
Of course the area could be visited after permission only and under guidance of the local government.
In the mean time Mr. Muhamad Walidad kept on visiting the area to look after the condition of the legendary flowers.
The area of the royal graveyard of the rajas of Selimbau in Kapuas Hulu district now could become a very important touristic site.
It is hoped, that all will be enjoyed in a very wise way by visitors under the guidance of the local government.
Until now this place is not very well-known,but if the very many orchid lovers of the world knows,that the black orchid really exists and that the royal graveyard of Selimbau is the rare site for it, it could be a very busy visited place in the future.

How a little kingdom like Selimbau could become a famous place in the modern time!

Royal Indonesian Wedding Festival Take Place on March 6, 2010

On 6 march the Forum Silaturahmi Keraton se Nusantara (the Cooperation of Friendship of the Indonesian Dynasties/FSKN) will held a special royal festival dedicated to the rich and very variated royal wedding culture of Indonesia.
The 1 day festival will take place in Sasono Utomo TM II building in Jakarta and will be opened already by the celebrity Mr. Menko Kesra at 9.00 in the morning.
The festival is of course open for the public.
Royal and Princely dynasties from several places of the Indonesian archipelago will show their centuries old wedding ceremonies, special wedding clothes, special wedding music, etc.
A few of them, who display and present their palace wedding culture are:the sultan's dynasty of Bulungan (East-Kalimantan), the sultan's dynasty of Siak (East-Sumatra), the pangeran dynasty of Gebang (Cirebon-area/West-Java) and the sultan's dynasty of Pontianak(West-Kalimantan).
The festival also will be attended by several kings,rajas,dynastychiefs and the like of areas all over Indonesia.
The royal wedding culture of Indonesia is one of the most interesting subjects of the general and royal culture.

Namatota;the most eastern Indonesian principality

In the SE East of the Bomberay peninsula of Papua lies the Namatota, or Kowiai area. The raja of Namaotota, who lived in the capital Namatota was together with the raja of Rumbati the most important raja of the peninsula.His area was the biggest of all, although not always he had a very direct influence there. Before the stateletts of Arguni and Kaimana were his vasals. The raja of Namaotota could augment his influence with the help of the sultan of Tidore. It was also described as a commercial principality with the economic centre in the capital. The dynasty says, they come from the Gunung Baik area originally. The present raja of Namatota is Raja Hayum Ombaier and like most of the other rajas here also member of the local government. The present raja is meber of the staf of the bupati of Kaimana.

Patipi;the religious principality of Papua

One of the former vasal-principalities of Rumbati was Patipi. Already long it had it's own rulers.It was known for the wish of their rulers to bring the islam to the surrounding peoples. The present raja dynasty is the 2nd dynasty, which ever ruled Patipi.The 1st raja dynasty still was in the government atmosphere in the 20th century and even delivered 2 rajas in that time, when the 2nd dynasty already was ruling.The present raja is only regent-raja of Paitpi:Regent-Raja Ahmad Iba and is considered as the 16th ruler of Paitpi. When his brother Raja Usman Iba died, he became regent, because the crownorince (son of the deceased raja) was then still studying:Raja Muda Atarai Iba. It is not known, when the crownprince will be installed as the new raja. The regent is a retired official of the department of fishery of the kabupaten Fak Fak.

Karangasem;the Prussia of the Bali-Lombok area

In the east of Bali lies the area of Karangasem. Before it was a very powerfull area.In the 18th century it was the rajapower also in Buleleng in the north and in the 17th century it began to become the paramount power in the nearby muslim island of Lombok. The present branch of the Karangasem dynasty actually ruled this empire, of which it was called the emperor, but in the 19th century the branch of the dynastysm, which ruled on Lombok began to rule as paramount rajas.The rule in Lombok ended at the end of the 19th century and the rule in Buleleng ca. 1850. The rajas of this dynasty always were known as good rulers, prorgassive rulers with a realistic mind:being an example for others.The present raja of Karangasem is a son of the last ruling raja. He was installed 9-4-2009 as the chief of the rajadynasty with the name Ida Anak Agung Gde Agung Putra Agung. He is a very well-known history professor on Bali.

The imperial palace of the Emperor of Minangkabauw, or the Emperor of Pagaruyung; theIstana Basa Pagaruyung;is nearly ready. The first time this palace was built was in 1805. Then in 1815 it was destroyedduring a islamic rebellion.It was rebuilt the 2nd time totally after WorldWar II. To be precise:1986 all was ready there.At 27-2-2007 the wooden palace was burnt again and directly they decidedto rebuilt it according to the old design.Now it is nearly fnished. Hereby the pictures of it. We shall update you, when it will be openend. Then THE symbol of Minangkabauwculture in West-Sumatra will be there again.

New Raja of Banggai Named

We have just received the info, that as 23rd tomundo, or raja of Banggai is proclaimed Raja Mohamad Fikran Ramadhan Iskandar Zaman.
He is the oldest son of Raja Ir. Iskandar Zaman Awaluddin, who died 27-1-2010 and was raja from 2008. Because the new raja is a minor of 16 years, his uncle Raja Muda Irawan Zaman Awaluddin will be the regent-raja.
It is not the tradition, that the new raja always must be the son of a previous raja,but in this situation the raja council (the so-called council of the basalo sangkap, or Kommisi Ampat) had decided,that now it is the best decission about it to be made.
With this proclamation Raja Mohamad Fikran Ramadhan Iskandar Zaman is probably the 2nd youngest king of Indonesia now. There are ca. 300 dynasties in Indonesia, but not all have an official proclaimed raja, or sultan.
The youngest Indonesian king at this moment is the sultan of Deli in East-Sumatra, who is 12 years old.
The sultan of Sambas in West-Kalimantan is like the new raja of Banggai also born in 1993.
The father of the new raja of Banggai was chief of the council of kings for the royal organisation FSKN for middle-Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tengah).
In march a new president of this branch of FSKN will be proclaimed.

We hope to inform you in due time about new developments in these matters.

"To prevent disharmony and disunity in the raja dynasty of Banggai Raja Iskandar Zaman Awaluddin asked the FSKN to play a coordinating function concerning the succesion.
The testament and later he raja dignity staf (tongkat) were given to the secretary-general of FSKN;Pangeran Gunarso Kusumodingrat and when the new raja of under the regent-raja would be proclaimed it would be said, that the FSKN would play such a role to keep the harmony inside the dynasty.
So, when later the new raja and the regent-raja will be officially presented to the outside world, the FSKN will give the official symbol of the raja dignity to the above mentioned royals.
It is not the meaning to manipulate the succesion, but just to prevent, that claimants will enter the royal arena and deny the decission made by the basalo langkap.
That decission was made by the late raja, because he has learned from situations in some other dynasties, where disunity is beginning to control a little bit the dynastic matters.
In fact that was a wise ecission of the late raja for that reason."

Manek Benjamin Messakh of Thie; The King, who preserved the history of the Rote-Ndao islands;died 25 januari 2010

Unfortunately the last time several of important and well-known,or lesser well-know rajas and sultans of Indonesia had died.
5 days ago one of the most important kings of the Rote-Ndao islands in East-Indonesia; being known for his preservation of the history of this archipelago, where the kings in fact continued to rule the longest in Indonesia(until ca. 1970) had died.
He was one of the most important and most active dynastychiefs from a total of 19 dynastychiefs;from the Rote islands;an archipelago of ca.
1.200 km2 lying west of Timor.
It seems, that most of his life was dedicated one way,or another to the well-being of Thie; one of the more bigger principalities of the Rote-islands, or of the Rote-archipelago in general.
When he was born in the 1930-ies His grandfather Manek Jeremias Wilhelmus Messakh was king of Thie;a royal power, which the Dutch had to reckon with, because of the consistent nationalistic performance against the Dutch government. Because of that his grandfather was deposed in 1948 after 17 years of rule.
After 2 tempory-rulers, his son Jusuf Nicolaas Messakh became manek,or king of Thie and ruled from 1949-1951. Then it was totally the end of Dutch rule in Indonesia (in fact in 1949) and Manek Jeremias W. Messakh could be installed as king of Thie again. He ruled for another 2 years.
Then the vice-manek,or fettor of Thie:Fettor Hermanus Haning ruled temporarily from 1953-1956.This ruler is the father of them present
bupati(districtchief) of Rote-Ndao:
Drs. Leonard Haning.
Then in 1956 the son of Manek Jermias W. Messakh and the father of the just deceased Manek of Thie Drs. Benjamin Messakh;Manek Jeremias Arnoldus Messakh became king of Thie. As such he ruled until 1962.Then this father was elected as subdistrict chief of West-Rote and his younger brother Thobias Arnoldus Messakh then was the last official royal ruler of Thie by being the caretaker of the royal dignity of manek from 1962-69.
The father of Manek Drs. Benjamin Messakh died in 1985.His uncle ex-Manek Thobias A. Messakh died in 2004.
When this uncle died the functioning of the dynasties were also revived in Rote-Ndao:as preservers of a big part of the local traditions.
In the mean time a lot had happened in the area. The Rotenese people;although having strong contacts with their brother peoples on nearby Timor;wanted to form their own seperate district.
Manek Benjamin Messakh would become the last assistant-bupati of Rote-Ndao in the transition period. After that period from 1998-2003 the new kabupaten of Rote-Nado was proclaimed.
Prince Drs. Benjamin Messakh was then officially proclaimed as the new king of Thie.
Officially they called it the chief of the manek,or royal clan BuralaE;named after the first king of this branch of the dynasty (who ruled continuously for nearly 300 years from then on):Manek Messakh Mbura (ruled 1674-1694).
This dynasty delivered 23 kings.
Manek Drs. Benjamin Messakh was the first dynastychief to be recognized again in the modern time as such.
As a assistant-bupati he already was known for his dedication to the well-being of his own and the people of the total Rote-Ndao archipelago.
He was very interested in history and preserved by all means the old historical stories from the area.
His dream was to publish his own book about the history of the 19 monarchies of the Rote-Ndao archipelago:being known as the area settled with the biggest density of monarchies of total Indonesia.
When I did in 2000 for the first time fieldwork concerning the dynasties of Rote-Ndao he did all, what was in his power to help me.
Although already being one of the mayor princes in the dynasty then, he was very humble in the acting towards other people.
And most of all:his rule was always clean!
He chared his historical interest for the principalities of Rote-Ndao with his wife, who is a princess of the Johannis dynasty of Landu(according to the traditional view the most important oldest kingdom of Rote-Ndao).
Apart from the politics his historical research was his lifework.
The last time he suddenly had problems with his heart and suddenly on the 25th of januari he died.
That the government will publish his bookmanuscript about the history of the principalities of Rote-Ndao;an area,which is also called because of his big density of dynasties:the archipelago of the kings.
That his succesor as manek,or dynastychief of Thie (also written as Ti'i) (unknown until nowto us,who will succeed him) will have the same wisdom, warm heart and dedication in live.
May the soul of this symphatic king,who had a well-spend life with his several dedications; rest in peace and that his family and dynasty will feel the comfort of the Loving God in Heaven during this difficult time.

The Tomundo of Banggai Died on January 27th, 2010

Raja of Banggai : Middle

Again a sad message have reached us:the passing away of the Tomundo of Banggai after only ca. 1 1/2 year of rule in a hospital in Jakarta.
He passed away at local time 18.00 at the 27th of januari 2010 at the Mitra Keluarga Hospital the dynasty announced officially.
His younger brother Raja Irwan Zaman Awaluddin was directly proclaimed as the new Tomundo of Banggai.
Only at the 14th of august 2008 HH Tomundo Ir. Haji Iskandar Zaman Awaluddin,MM;born as the greatgrandson of the last raja of Banggai of their more direct line;Tomundo Haji Awaluddin(1924-1939);was installed as the new tomundo of the in N.E.-Sulawesi lying big area of Banggai.
In Banggai there is no direct father-to-son succesion, but they sometimes tend to follow that line;espacially in the present time.
When Raja Haji Awaluddin died in 1939 his oldest son Raja Muda Jaida was to young to become the new raja,so an influential member of one of the 3 branches of the dynasty was chosen to be the raja from then on:Raja Haji Aminuddin alias Raja Sukuran Amir (1939-1957). He was from the branch of the predecessor of Raja H. Awaluddin:Raja Abdulrahman(1904-1922). Descent via the female line.
Descent via a female line also is allowed in this dynasty.
Because the on 27-1-2010 died Tomundo Ir. Haji Iskandar Zaman Awaluddin was the son of the granddaughter of the in 1939 died Raja,or Tomundo Haji Awaluddin.
This line provides the most rajas of Banggai.
So with him the strongest branch of the dynasty came back to the throne.
The 49 years old raja was working as a teacher and on 1 july 2009 was even so popular,that he was chosen as member of the local parliament.
Banggai is an island group,but also the name of an island.
The area derives it name from the island, where the present dynasty comes from.
Between ca. 1365 and ca. 1478 there was some kind of stateformation here, in which time also the 1st real monarch in the area was installed.
The present statehood of Banggai;an united principality of Banggai, must have been made ca. 16-5-1600.
Already soon the big local power here;Ternate;could be the big brother also in this area,but the Banggai people are known for their strong feelings of a form of liberty, so tried to regain their first freedom all the time. That is why, that looking on the pedigree of the raja dynasty of Banggai you see so many rajas, who were deposed,because did not want to cooperate with the then then paramount power in the area;Ternate,or Holland.
After the death of Raja Nurdin (1870-1880);the 2nd most important branch of the dynasty never came back with a raja.
The present dynasty is said to be descendant from a sultan of Banten on Java. This sultan's son was armyleader of the sultan of Ternate (N.-Moluccans), who had conquered the area in 1580. After some kind of stateforming after a chaotic time his brother Raja Perinci Mandapaar became the 4th raja of his dynasty and could bring some unification in Banggai. Also some from of independence.
Banggai was however reconquered by Ternate in 1655.
Much later the total freedom for Banggai under Dutch rule was regained in the 20th century.
The last ruling raja,Raja Sukuran Amir;was followed as the face of the monarchy by his son Raja Muda Muhammad Chair Amir alias Raja Hideo Amir.
In 2008 however the traditional council of the dynasty decided to let install Tomundo Ir. Haji Iskandar Zaman as the 22th raja of Banggai.
So sad,that already after less than 1 1/2 year after his installation the life of this monarch of Banggai ended.
He was known for having so much ideals to give the people of Banggai an indentity within the Indonesian state:Unity in Diversity;the words under the Indonesian coat of arms; was a loved principle of him.

His remains were flied back to Banggai on the 28th of januari, where royal ceremonials would take place;attended by the dynasty,local government and traditional chiefs and many representatives of the Indonesian royal world;followed by his royal funeral.
This all would be led by the new raja of Banggai;his younger brother Raja Irwan Zaman Awaluddin.
We would like to give the dynasty and the people of Banggai hereby our sincere condolences;not in the last place the widow of the deceased Tomundo:
Her Highness Hajjah Ratu Zulvaina Djibran Zaman Awaluddin.
May the ratu and her close family espacially find the strenght of God to be able to take up the life again in due time.
After the prescribed 40 days of mourning the dynasty will decide over the date of the installation of the new raja.
Maybe he follow in the wise footsteps of his brother.
May the soul of the 22th Tomundo of Banggai:Raja Ir. Haji Iskandar Zaman Awaluddin rest in peace!

Raja of Fatagar Dies.

Again in one month time ca. one of the monarchs of Papua died. This time it was also an important raja and an important politician.
On 28-11-2009 Regent-Raja Ismail Samali Bauw of Rumbati died. One of the most important politicians of the Fak Fak/Kaimana area, where are 8 of the 13 monarchies of Papua.
On the 26th of december 2009 Raja Haji Said Arobi Uswanas of Fatagar, south of Rumbati,but in the same district/kabupaten of Fak Fak, died as well. Before he entered politics as a full time job, he was a businessman. One of his things was a well-known restaurant in the city
of Fak Fak. Later he became quite important;f.i; as a member of the parliament of kabupaten Fak Fak.
Maybe his son Raja Muda Jufri Uswanas, or another member of the raja dynasty will after the prescribed 40 days of mourning be selected as the next raja of Fatagar.
May his soul rest in peace.

In due time we inform you about further developments also in this dynasty.

In Papua there is an extraordinary principality called Arguni. Strong in some aspects of it's existance.
It's lying on the north part of the Bomberay peninsula.
Before it was an area,where the ruler was a representative of the once very powerfull and paramount power in a part of this peninsula: the raja of Rumbati.
Like Sekar, Wertuar and Patipi this area was ruled by clans, which delived rulers not with a raja title.
Later these areas became more and more powerfull themselves and could gain some amount of independence from Rumbati.
In ca. 1865 the ruler of Rumbati received the rajatitle from the paramount ruler in this area:the sultan of Tidore.
When the Dutch East-Indish Government really obtained the influence here at the end of the 19th century the raja of Arguni became more or less totally independent.
Sekar, Arguni and probably also Wertuar were later not ashamed to acknowledge the paramount position of Rumbati in the northern part of the Bomberay peninsula.
Nearly all of the 9 principalities in this peninsula had his own influence area outside his central area;mainly on the Bird's Head peninsula.
These influenced was reduced more and more.But strange enough only in the Arguni area this influence remained very strong.Only in 1928 a begin of a reduced influence was started (the 2 areas of Arguni then were in 2 seperate districts).

The raja of Arguni also was always known a a strong bringer of the islam religion in his influence area.
The Arguni area was known as the area of the excellent boatmakers. The Arguni boats (for business for instance) were always real bigger than the used boats in the other Bomberay principalities.
Also the pottery and the sagoproduction in Arguni is well-known in the area.
The raja dynasty has strong descent connections also with Ceram.
The businnes principalities of the Papua Bomberay peninsula were always strong in trading with the areas around them.
These activites remained strong later.The present rajas are nowadays also engaged in business, or/and are engaged in local politics.
Before Arguni was quite densely populated. Later the amount of population diminished a little.
Arguni is described in the modern time maybe not as the most richest principality in this area, but for sure one of the most remarquable principalities.

New raja of Rumbati was Already Selected and Proclaimed 30-11-2009

In Papua 2 sons of recently deceased rajas were proclaimed recently.
The 2 rajas are:
Raja Abubakar Saleh Bauw;son of the on 29-11-2009 deceased Raja Haji Ismail Samali Bauw of Rumbati and Raja Taufiq Heru Uswanas;son of the on 24-12-2009 deceased Raja Said Arobi Uswanas of Fatagar.
The new raja of Rumbati was proclaimed after the 40 days of general mourning on 8-1-2009 and the new raja of Fatagar was proclaimed after 7
days of strong mourning on 31-12-2009.
I try to inform you about these 2 new monarchs of Papua in due time.

The Sultan of Cirebon-Kanoman;another Indonesian King, Who Saves The Local Identity

The last years the present sultan of Cirebon-Kanoman was much in the news. He belongs to a quite nationalistic dynasty, who also had some quite strong opinions about it's position. Cirebon is one of the most early islamic kingdoms of Indonesia.Some say, that you can very good feel the traditional atmosphere of Indonesian in Cirebon. The Cirebon kings are descendants of Sunan Gunung Jati; one of the original bringers of the islam to Java. His son Hassanuddin became the first king of Banten in West-Java and from the brother of this king;Pangeran Pasarean;descends the kings of Cirebon. After the death of Pangeran Giri Laya of Cirebon in 1662 his kingdom was divided into 3 areas among his sons with a special roulating system of succesion. When king of the first branch died, than a prince of the 2nd branch became the crownprince there,etc. That system ended later. In the 18th century even a 4th branch of the dynasty began to rule. So now you had the Cirebon branches of Kanoman (2nd most important), Kasepuhan (1st one), which were both sultans. Then the pangeran branch of Kacirebonan (3rd most important) and the Panembahan branch of Kaprobonan (who only delivered 3 rulers for a relative short time, but continued to exist a a dynastic branch). In 1819 the remaining 3 branches were abolished as ruling dynasties, but continued as keepers of the traditions in all it's aspects. As such they were discovered in the independence struggle after WW II. Already before the greatgrandfather of the present sultan;Sultan Anom Raja Nurbuat (1934-1935) asked to be more recognized as a real sultan with a full title like his forefathers. It was then the time, that the Dutch East-Indish government was thinking of restoring abolished dynasties in Indonesia as the first steps to give back the government responsibilities to the local people of Indonesia. The son of Sultan Anom Raja Nurbuat;Sultan Anom Muhammad Nurus (1935-1989);even asked after WW II to be a ruling sultan again and hoped, that Cirebon would become one kingdom. His son Sultan Anom Muhammad Djalaluddin;father of the present sultan of Cirebon-Ka-noman;ruled until his death in 2002. This sultan continued the restoration of at least the cultural function of the dynasty. His oldest son of his royal wife was the later Sultan Elang Muhammad Emiruddin;born in 1973. The a few months older brother of the latter had actually a non-royal mother, so according to the traditional rules of succesion he was not the 1st eligible person to become a sultan:Pangeran Elang Muhammad Saladin. For some reasons later mentioned Prince Saladin assisted much his father in his function a sultan.His father had also symphaty for the idea, that this prince would have a chance to become a sultan. But the dynasty network thought, that it was better,that the tradition would be maintained. Sultan Anom Muhammad Djalaluddin died 18-11-2002. His brother then was temporary-sultan for a while to sort out things. Suddenly Prince Saladin let install himself as sultan in the palace (5-3-2003). One of the reasons for it was, that his close family found, that the health problems of his full-royal brother was a point of consideration, wether he could be a good sultan, or not. The day thereafter in a bigger ceremony Sultan Elang Muhammad Emiruddin was installed as 12th king of Cirebon-Kanoman. The recognition of the local government for one of the 2 royals was not immediately there. Sultan Emiruddin had after a while enough of the unharmonious atmosphere in the palace and removed his brother Saladin and his followers from the palace. In Indonesia you can see, that the government also likes to see one king only living in the palace. This present sultan of Cirebon-Kanoman is a special king actually. When he was 9 years old he got a trouble with his ears and when he was 16 his ability to hear ceased to exist. But, which is mostly the case, when a sense-organ ceased to function;other sense-organs are sharpened. The young Prince Emiruddin developped a very sharp eye for the details of the weaving - and other local culture. Espacially the local batik is his specialism. From that he could make his later work.That work and specialism had resulted in fascinating batik exhibitions he organise regulalry in his aim to preserve the true local culture. In this he is supported by his dynastic near family. The sultan married in 2000 with Sultana Ratu Dian Astuti. On 11-12-2001 the present crownprince of his branch was born:Pangeran Raja Muhammad Qodirudin. It is also hoped,that the harmony in the dynasty can be restored completely. The Kanoman dynasty is known for it's firm conviction for it's own opinion, but for his willingness to listen to people with other opinions. It is wished, that this talent will be used for the good.

Malaysia and Brunei show their royalty online in abundance,but the (so-called non-ruling) dynasties of their neighbours in Indonesia and the Philippines are hard to find in pictures on internet. Only maybe in social network pages of sites like facebook, etc. of royalty from there. But then you must know many names of Indonesia royals.
Sometimes you find a rare,but beautifull exception.
When you search for molied.multiply.com Sultan Ternate,then you find some interesting and beautifull recent photoseries about Sultan Mudafar Syah II of Ternate.
This sultan is known for his hard work to preserve the ages old royal traditions and it's functioning in the social network and his functioning as moral king of his people.

Raja from Papua Dies

On the 29th of november 2009 one of the most important rajas of Papua died:Raja Ismail Bauw.
Like his father Raja Ibrahim Bauw:ruled from 1946 and died 1994 , he was an important political leader in Papua.
In the begining of the 1960-ies,when there was the matter of Papua would join Indonesia finally;he tried to keep Indonesia one,so not all kind of independent states in the former Dutch East-Indies.
His son Crownprince Ismail Bauw was then the sub-district chief of the Fak Fak area.
Already soon the crownprince took over the political leadership of his father.
Raja Ismail Bauw as a young politician was in the beginning very much in favour to keep Indonesia one, But later in his more older and mild years he also could understand the ideas of Papuan people, who wished more autonomy for the area.
A big part of his life he was political active. In 1999 he was still the candidate for the local parliament.
The historical grown role of the rajas in Papua is still functioning as a part of the social system.
Before they were under the paramount rule (sometimes at least nominally) of the sultanate of Tidore in the North-Moluccans. The representative of the Tidore sultan in Papua was the raja of Lilinta on the island of Misool in the Raja Ampat islands (before the west coast of Papua).
Locally the raja of Lilinta was represented by the raja of Rumbati, who also was a paramount raja in big parts of the Onin, or Bomberai peninsula.During the course of the history several parts of the Rumbati principality became independent principalities themselves.
Raja Ismail Bauw was already sick for some time.
May his sole can take part in the eternal peace and that his succesor will be a leader with wisdom.

The Datu of Luwu

In the very old time the rulers of Buginese Kingdom of Luwu were the main powers on the island of Sulawesi, which held sway over many Toraja peoples to. Later the kingdoms of Bone and Gowa in SW-Sulawesi began to be more powerfull, but Luwu remained a big power, having it's sphere of influence in a big area. So nowadays several non-Luwu districts/kabupatens on Sulawesi still have a very strong traditional relationships with Luwu. The datu's of Luwu also always stayed very selfconfident. Until the end of the Dutch rule in Indonesia. Of course the datu's also saw the good sides of Dutch rule, but always wanted to have independence for their area and country. The last in this line of freedomseekers kings was Datu Andi Djemma Barue (a later national hero). He ruled 1936-1946(deposed) and 1949-1959 as king;from 1957-1960 as bupati of Luwu. He died in 1965.His son Andi Achmad was bupati of Luwu 1968-1972.The traditional postion of his dynasty always remained strong.In the present time of revival of the cultural and social value of the Indonesian dynasties also here that has not happened without problems. In Luwu the succesion always was settled with the rule, that the new king,or queen had to be descended as much as possible form former monarchs. That is the so-called "being of pure royal blood" principle. Nowadays some dynasties, which did not use the latter principle of succesion also try to use the principle "a monarch will be followed by the oldest child". The hereby depicted Datu Iwan Alamsyah Bau Djemma Barue is the oldest son of Andi Bau Djemma gelar Tellu PoccoE, who is the only son from the marriage of Datu Andi Djemma Barue with his fullblooded royal daughter of a raja of Bone(the also as Indonesian national hero recognized Arumpone/Raja Andi Mappanjuki). He was installed as datu of Luwu in 2006. Before he already was considered as the semi-official dynastychief, but in 2003 some people in the dynasty network thought it also good to use the principle "oldest child is succesor", so another grandchild of Datu Andi Djemma Barue was respected from that time as the main person in the datu dynasty. This princess is Datu Andi Luwu;the daughter of the oldest son of Datu Andi Djemma, who always was a big help of his father before and also an important person in the independence struggle in Luwu after WW II. Nowadays you see, that also the traditional values are restored in Luwu in which the dynasty also plays an important role. You can see, that we live now in a time, where the good things of the old time are taken back and the unneccesary things are left behind. Also here it is hoped, that wishes of harmony will remain.

Indonesian King attends Royal Installation in Malaysia

On the 26th of october 2009 the 11 th Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan federation was installed as the crown of a ca. week long installation ceremonies in this Malaysian federal royal member state.
The new king;Tuanku Muhriz;was chosen 29-12-2008 as such by the 4 eligible member rulers of the Negri Sembilan federation as succesor to his shortly before deceased uncle Tuanku Jaafar.
Already enough has been written about this installation before, so it would be a bit unnessarily to write again elaborately about it.
Only it was an extraoridinary fact,that an Indonesian king and his queen were also attending officially.
It is Sutan Taufik Thaib gelar Yang Dipertuan Tuanko Mudo Mangkuto Alam of Pagaruyung.
The reason for it, was that some centuries ago the present ruling system of the Negri Sembilan federation;a by Minangkabauw from Sumatra peopled area;took shape, when the member states went to their old homeland on Sumatra to ask the Emperor of the Minangkabauw peoples there to give them a prince of his dynasty to be the first ruler of an united Negri Sembilan.
And so it happened.
The historical contacts with the long ago departed homeland remained very strong again ever since and that is why this ceremonial bond between the 2 areas was made in the open again by the attending of the king of the Minangkabauw area on Sumatra;also called the Emperor of Pagaruyung. He is seen on the 2nd picture.
Somewhere in the audience was the ruler of an other seperate Minangkabauw area;the close to Negri Sembilan attached area Naning in Malakka. The Dato Undang with name Abdul Latif of Naning will be shown in due time attending the event.

The installation itself was also attended by Malaysia royalty and the crown prince couple of Brunei.
The royal banquet afterwards was also attended by more royalty from all over Malaysia, the Sultan of Brunei with his near family, the Emperor of Pagaruyung with his wife and more very high dignitaries.

May all this be a blessing also for a wise rule of the new king of Negri Sembilan.

Present Situation of the Pakualaman Dynasty (Yogjakarta-area)

YOGYAKARTA - Puro Pakualaman internal conflict since 1999 seems to have ended earlier. After waiting for a family reconciliation for 10 years there was no clarity, some son of the late KGPAA Paku Alam VIII in the near future will hold the event jumenengan Paku Alam IX.

While the Purnamaningrum, KPH Ambarkusumo, Bray Retnomartani, KPH Gondhokusumo, Retno Suskamdani Bray, Bray Retno Rukmini, KPH Tjondrokusumo, Bray and Widanarni Retno Indrokusumo KPH.

Wertuar;one of the 8 principalities of Papua island

Raja Musa Heremba and Ratu Wa Taribu Heremba Penunuh in the airplane in

Indonesia has ca. 300 recognized dynasties,who ruled before over independent monarchies.These were ranging from empires,sultanates to big and small principalities. Nowadays these dynasties still fullfill it's role as cultural and historical identity points for the local populations at least.
The island of Papua also had principalities:8. Before the coast of Papua is an archipelago with 4 other principalities (west of it) and to the north is the little former principality of the Mapia islands. One of the Papua island principalities is the principality of Wetuar;lying west of the city of Kokas;one of the 3 main cities in the Onin-peninsula area, where all the 8 Papua principalities are lying.These areas are ruled by dynasties originating in the area, of mixed local/outside origin,or originally coming from the Moluccans.
The present dynasty of Wertuar is the Heremba clan and the present raja is Raja Musa Heremba, being the 10th ruler of the area. This clan delivered always the rulers of the area,but not always the raja. Before it was a sort of vasal-area of nearby principality of Rumbati;the former major power in the area. Between 1850 and 1870 it was neccesarily to install a seperate raja for the Wertuar area,so Raja Semempes was installed, who already was a coordinating man a bit there.He was the first and last raja of the old time,although his son Waraburi also is recognized as a sort of ruler of Wertuar,but probably without raja-title. Another source give different/additional info about former rajas of Wertuar. The Heremba clan was then already the Raja Muda clan (vice-raja) of Wertuar.They need to have a seperate raja of Wertuar came back strongly after a while. A certain Raja Muda Lakatey Heremba was installed as raja muda in 1886 and was found a good ruler enough to install him 20-11-1911as the first raja of Wertuar of his dynasty;but nominally still under the rule of the principality of Rumbati. It became total independent in the beginning of the 1920-ies,when the then raja also toook the raja-title. The strong ruler Raja Lakatey Heremba died in 1913 and was succeeded by his son Raja Paris Heremba. Also known as a dedicated ruler for his principality.
The main remaining area of the former principality of Wertuar is not so big, but all the Papua island principalities also have a commercial influence area, which before also more or less belonged to their existence. Raja Paris Heremba abdicated because of old age in 1952 and was succeeded by the last ruling raja of Wertuar:his son Raja Nazar Heremba. This raja ruled over an area consisted of 8 villages.
Nowadays these 8 are grouped into 5 official villages. The dynasty originally comes from the Baham area;the border area between the Onin peninsula and the rest of the island of Papua.They can consider Kramongga village as their residence village. Raja Nazar Heremba became after Papua was attached to Indonesian in the beginning 1960-ies an official in the local government. His father had witnessed the transitional period of Papua, because died in 1961. In his time Raja Nazar Heremba was known as the most educated raja of the area and known also for his very big dedication to bring development to his people. Still he is loved very much in the memory of the people of Wertuar.He died in 1988 and before his burial his son Raja Musa Heremba was chosen and installed as the 10th ruler of Wertuar 15-4-1988. That was done;even in the so-called modern time, by the traditional chiefs according to traditional rules. Later he also had to be recognized by the local government. Like his forefathers;Raja Musa Heremba is known for his caring for his people. He is now a high official at the department of transport of the district government of Fak Fak. From his marriage with Ratu Wa Taribu Heremba Penunuh he has 7 children, of which the oldest son;Raja Muda Abdul Mutalib Heremba;already was passed away before 2009. The succession in Wertuar doesn't go automatically from father to oldest son. The in 1955 born Raja Musa Heremba had an older brother called Raja Muda Umar Heremba, who died when he was 7 and some other brothers, but one way, or another the traditional chiefs and the important members of the dynasty choose for him as 10th ruler of Wertuar. The present crownprince of Wertuar is like him also not the oldest son:Raja Muda Umar Rifai Heremba is now 23 years. Wertuar is lying near the very important harbour of Kokas and in the Dutch time also had their as a a raja their main residence to be close to Dutch government;so lived in the same city as the raja of Sekar. Sometimes the rajas of this area were called the business rajas and they still have these talents until now. The existence of Wertuar as a seperate principality was not always undisputed,because in the past the rajas of Sekar tried to convince Holland to let Wertuar be considered as a part of Sekar.These requests were never rewarded. Now all is harmony here between the 2 dynasties,who are also through marriage related to each other. Nowadays also the raja dynasty of Wertuar is recognized by the other dynasties of Indonesia as a by history founded ruling family;being nowadays a focuspoint for local history and culture. The knowledge and feeling for these matters are nowadays still very much alive and the members of the local dynasties here also have an important place as members elected in the local government. This article could be made after several interviews with Ratu Muda Arwan Heremba S.IP. (the sister of Raja Musa Heremba), Raja Muda Umar Rifai Heremba (the crownprince of Wertuar)and Raja Muda Satria Paris Heremba (the nephew of Raja Musa Heremba). Sambaliung get's a new sultan after 49 years

On the 19th of october 2009 Datu Fachruddin;the oldest surviving son of Sultan Mohammad Aminuddin of Sambaliung in East-Kalimantan;was installed as new sultan here.
The 66 year old sultan is one of the 17 children of the last ruling sultan of Sambaliung in the Berau district, who ruled as regent, sultan and later as areachief (of total Berau) from 1902 until his death in 1960.
The 4th son of the late sultan was for a long time the main representative of the dynasty.
Already 6 of his brothers and 9 of his sisters have died.
The last years he was quite busy with a project to make a forefather of him;called Raja Alam;a new National Hero of Indonesia.
This former ruler of Sambaliung between 1830-1834 and founder of a seperate Sambaliung,away from the Berau sultanate, was blamed to find no reason whatsoever to cooperate with Holland on any field and also working together with pirates, who made the area unsafe for international sea transport.
The new sultan is known as a friendly and humble person,who has time for everybody.
He didn't want to rush his installation as a new sultan,although it was clear for years, that he was the best candidate.
Now his patience is rewarded.
He is now, besides the sultan of Kutai Kartanegara;the 2nd sultan, who is installed.
He has taken however not yet the title of sultan, but pemangku adat(chief of the tradition).
Such royals with a similar title are also to be found in some other areas of East-Kalimantan like the nearby Gunung Tabur (the other area in Berau), Bulungan and the a bit more far lying Pasir, but these dignataries are not installed in such an official and elaborate way.
In Banjarmasin we only have a prince, which is chief of the dynastic organisation.

We all hope of course,that also this new king will be a source of identity for the local people.That this installation will really crrate a new feeling of compeleteness for everybody there.

The statue that is now placed on the northern most island of Miangas is a signal to everybody in the world, that for stability in the world it would be good to recognize the settled boundaries.
Raja Bataha Santiago was a raja of Manganitu of the island of Sangir (north of Menado). He ruled from ca. 1666 until he was executed as an old man in 1675.
At that time there was a struggle going on between the Roman Catholic kingdom of Spain and the Protestant state of Holland in the archipelago.
Holland was then consolidating his position in this area, which was officially a vasal-area of the sultanate of Ternate.
Raja Bataha Santiago still kept on making rebellious atmosphere in the area to help Spain tp come back in the area. One time it was found enough and the sultan of Ternate then went to Sangir island to stop the unpeacefull atmosphere, imprisonned the raja and let him execute then.
300 years later the Indonesian government decided to proclaim Raja Bataha Santiago then as a national hero.
After his death Managnitu was decided into 2 parts for a while.
The island of Miangas was never a part of Manganitu principality,but was known as a semi-independent area before and also part of the principality of Kendahe-Tahuna (proba- bly only before of Kendahe) in the Nanusa-area.From 1912 it became part of the new principality of the Talaud-islands.
Spain;as colonial power in the Philippines;claimed the island and later that claim was inherited by it's succesor in the area the USA.
But the international law powers decided always in favour of Holland very easily.

On the 26th of october 2009 His Royal Highness Sultan H. Aji Salehoeddin II of Kutai (officially plus Kartanegara Ing Martadipura) celebrated his 85th birthday as well as the 10th year of the installation of the sultan. That was done in the new palace;finished in 2002;and attended by many high government officials and other respected guests. In the special meetingplace of the palace for the guests;the pendoppo;the guests were entertained by special selected royal dances and delicious royal food. All is special about this sultan and his area. Although the total area of Kutai is now divided into several districts (kabupatens), the people of Kutai area still keep contact with it's dynasty. Kutai Kartanegara is also called the Brunei of Indonesia:because of it's oilwealth it is the richest area of Indonesia. Also some people calls it the Japan of Indonesia:Kutai is the oldest royal area of Indonesia;like Japan, which also has a very, very old still existing dynasty. Kutai was founded as a kingdom in ca. 400 of the Christian era. It is also the first dynasty, which is the Indonesian government allowed in the modern time to have it's dynastychief to be installed (and even coronated) as a king. That happened it 1999. Sultan H. Aji Salehoeddin II is a king, which is known for his true role as a father of his area. He is known for bringing back all difficult issues of live back to the erall needed basic. So his influence as the moral consiousnes of Kutai is still very big because of that for instance. His warm character for everybody;which his crownprince for sure has inherited;doesn't prevent, that his people have a very high respect for him and more like to see him as their king,than as their father. Although the sultan is now already 85 years,he is still amazingly vital for his age. In an interview I had with him, he told me, that he for all his life took very good care of what he eat, he has every day enough exercize, do not bring stress to life, never forget to uphold the contact with the Almighty God and never being in hatefull contacts with anybody. Sultana Aji Ratu Aida Amidjoyo is maybe of the same opinion as the sultan,because she also shows a very big energetic life despite her age;also always spreading an affectional mood to everybody. The day of celebration in the palace was opened,when a granddaughter of the sultan showe a very special royal dance for the audience. That the royal couple of Kutai may continue for long being the father and mother of their area and also the symbol of the royal revival in Indonesia. May God blesses them all.

Sultan of Bacan (N-Moluccan) Died on Monday 21 September 2009

Ternate (AFP) - Thousands of Ternate, North Maluku (Maluku Utara) welcomed the corpse of Sultan of Bacan Gahral Adyan Shah at Babullah Airport, Tuesday, which was brought from Jakarta using charter aircraft.

Sultan Bacan died at his home in the area of Pondok Indah Jakarta on Monday evening due to illness suffered kidney failure last few years. He died at the age of 66 years.

From Sultan Babullah Airport, the corpse of former Regent of the North Maluku (Maluku Utara) while still in the area of Maluku province) was taken to Kedaton Sultanate of Ternate.

Sultan Bacan still a close relative of Shah Sultan Ternate Mudaffar Syah. Sultan's body was taken to the next Bacan Labuha, South Halmahera District (Halmahera Selatan) using a motor boat.

Some officials in Maluku Utara, like Governor of Maluku Utara Thaib Armaiyn , Lieutenant Governor of Maluku Utara Gani Kasuba, regent / mayor as Maluku Utara, parliament leaders and traditional leaders in the area looking corpse drive in Sultan of Bacan to the port Bastiong of Ternate.

Sultan Bacan left a wife and two children. One son works at one foreign bank and to this day he has not arrived in Ternate.

One community leader in Maluku Utara also Vice Chairman of Legislative of Maluku Utara Mr. Syaiful Ruray said has lost one of his best characters.

He added that the deceased had been a boon to many areas Maluku Utara both in terms of governance and the social field.

Sultan Bacan was one of the pioneering expansion into the province of North Maluku in 1999 ago. He was also instrumental in fighting many division two districts in Malut into nine districts.

Meanwhile, information from the Sultanate Bacan Bacan mentioned that the Sultan will be buried in the courtyard of Sultan Bacan on Tuesday night after the first interred in the Sultanate Kedaton Bacan. (*)

Sultan's dynasty of Bulungan publishes book

Since the local autonomy laws of 1999 more qand more dynasties are writing their own history to preserve the local history also as a part of the total Indonesia history in this hugue country.

So in 2006 the Sultan's dynasty of Bulungan in N.E.-Kalimantan let publish a little book of 80 pages about the history of this kingdom. It is called "Sekilas sejarah Kesultanan Bulungan dari masa ke masa and written by H. Syed Ali Amin Bilfaqih, S.Ip;a local politician, who is intermarried in the sultan's dynasty (married with the daughter of the last officiqal crownprince from government kingdom time) and also descendant of an Arab man from Hadramaut/S.-Yemen,who brought islam to Bulungan ca. 260 years ago.

The book give a basic insight in to the history of the sultanate of Bulungan and also shows a bit of the importance of preserving that history and local culture(including the royal culture);f.i. via their own Bulungan semi-royal festival called Birau-festival (mostly in october-bi-annual?).

It contains some historical black and white pictures and some nice colour pictures,which show in its's function, this historybook is quite unique and we hope, that later a more large and richly illustrated book will be issued. The writer is one of the main representatives of the royal family of Bulungan.

This royal family;before quite rich;is known for their very dedicated way of preserving all kind a local culture and history;some deeds for which they need to be given compliments.

Since ca. 20 years the dynastymembers and their network try to find all over the world sources and old pictures, which give a showing of all the aspects of Bulungan live.

Loloda - the 5th principality of the North-Moluccans

Normally we speak of 4 kingdoms in the North-Moluccans :Ternate, Tidore, Bacan and Jailolo.
But there is a 5th principality, about which not very much people know about. It is the on the west-part of the island of Halmahera lying principality of Loloda.
About this there are several legends:the first raja descended from a sultan of Bacan, founded by a Prince/descendant of a sultan of Ternate, etc.
Western historains say, that in the very old time,when the principalities in the N-Moluccans were founded, there were more little stateletts. Besides the 4 later sultanates, not one of them survived, only Loloda did.
Before it must have been a quite powerfull principality, but later lost power to Jailolo, who then became the 1st ruler of the N-Moluccans.
But up until the Dutch time the rajas of Loloda were recognized as semi-independent rajas under Ternate. It is not known,when exactly they came under the rule of Ternate.
In 1908 the Dutch East-Indish Government found it better to more centralize the rule here, so Raja Syamsuddin (died 1915) then lost his semi-independent position and became just a districtchief with he title Sengaji. Also you can call them later Jogugu's.
The last ruling member of the dynasty was Jongofa, or Jogugu Haji Djami Bin Syamsuddin; 2nd son of the last raja, who had from 1945 a bit a restored position as local ruler. He stayed on as traditional leader of his people until his death in 1977. Nothing special was than done in the dynasty, until the time,that the dynasties in Indonesia were allowed to retake their cultural place in the society.
In 1999 his son Jogugu Bayan Bin Syamsuddin was installed. He died in 2004.
He was succeeded by the in 1959 born son Jogugu Kaicil Lutfi Muhammad Syamsuddin, who was officially installed as monarch of Loloda in the palace of the sultan of Ternate 30-8-2009.
The present jogugu of Loloda is a specialist on agriculture in the local government.
The dynasty maintains a very interesting website at "Loloda Kerajaan Facebook". Click on the name Loloda Kerajaan there and then on notes, or pictures, video, etc. and you will see many interesting information.

Finally the world can be witness,that the rajadynasty of Loloda can take his place in the world of traditional ruling families again.
Also the sultan of Ternate is a help to restore old traditional institutes, so that the local people have a good focuspoint for their own cultural identity.

The quite big and important area of Sintang in West-Kalimantan was one of the first areas,where it's ruler was installed again as cultural-monarch.
Because the sultan is also the chief of the believers of the islam in the area, he could also bless the crownprince during his wedding.
Raden Barrie Danu Brata is the son of the late Drs. Raden Muhammad Chalidi Ismail Tsafiudin (who after World War II was the eligible prince to become the new Panembahan of Sintang. The Panembahan here and all other monarchs of Japan were killed by Japan in 1944). When this dynastychief died, his sons were considered to young and unexperienced to become the new dynastychief, or Panembahan of Sintang.
So his brother Raden Ikhsani Ismail Tsafiudin became the new dynastychief and later Panembahan and Sultan (Sri Kesumana Negara V). Because the present sultan has only daughters, the sons of his older brother are 1st and 2nd now in the line of succession.
The dynasties of West-Kalimantan are very active in preserving the royal culture in their areas and trying to preserve also their function in the positive way.

SBY Open National Meeting (Silatnas) of Sultan And Raja

Jakarta: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono accompanied Mother Country Ani Bambang Yudhoyono opened the meeting at the National (Silatnas) and Sultan Raja Nusantara, Friday (7 / 8) afternoon, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta. Silatnas which will take place on August 7-8 in Jakarta was attended by 135 King and consort of the Sultan and the 15 Crown and daughter, relatives and the Prince Sultan and the King.

President SBY in his speech welcomed the proposed Agency Workers (BP) Silatnas to build this kind of museum or gallery that displays the national heritage the kingdom or sultanate - any name - in this archipelago. "I ask the brother Kebudayan and Tourism Minister, and Minister of Education under the coordination related Menkokesra, get experts talking history, cultural, successor and heir to the kingdom and sultanate to formulate a national gallery as what we want to achieve that," said SBY.

Royal National Indonesian Conference 5-7 august 2009

The National Royal Conference;Silaturahmi Nasional Lembaga Kerajaan dan Kesultanan Nusantara;which will take place in Jakarta from 5 until 7 august 2009.
It is organised by the Forum Komunikasi dan Informasi Keraton se Nusantara (FKIKN);the 2nd largest royal organisation of Indonesia;and will be attended by 2 of the 3 other royal organisations:AKKI and FKKAS(only active on Sulawesi).
The real conference will take place from 5 august in the evening and shall end with a meeting of all the kings, rajas, dynastychiefs and other important royalty at the palace of President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono at 7 august.
Such a royal meeting was also done at this presidential palace in november 2008, when there was a big conference of the 4th royal organisation FSKN.
The members hope to talk with the president about the support of a revival of interest, preservance of knowledge of the royal culture and history.
There are all kind of projects. One of it is the making of an encyclopedy about all the ca. 300 dynasties of Indonesia.
It is hoped, that also the unity were be talked about. That the 4 royal organisations in the future will work as harmonious organisations.

This Installation king was attended by the Sultan of Sintang, multi-ethnic people, Muspida elements, and the Malay community of Sekadau District.
Before installation, the king of cultural welcome the arrival in the Tar Music and accompaniment tracks typical Malay Sekadau. Then the King going to seat have been provided in the style of the kingdom and close by two guards the left and right. Gusti Muhammad Efendi looks stout with the wear yellow.
After that, the procession begins with the greeting words of the head of the council's multi-ethnic tradition. Installation King is seen as glorious atmosphere of solidarity between ethnic attend these events. It start by rituals and customs around the seat of King confetti by yellow rice and some dishes that has been provided in the front seat of King.
Together with the installation King also held a music and songs brought by two groups.
At the end, Culture and the King appear with delegation of various ethnic taking picture together and After the King Sekadau get congratulation from the invitation that came from.

Biggest Royal Local Indonesia Festival Starts Again

In the centre of the oldest Indonesian kingdom; Kutai,or more officially Kutai Kartanegara ing Martadipura; the sultan's dynasty with the help of the government of the Kabupaten (district) Kutai Kartanegara; has begun on sunday again to start the royal local festival called Festival Erau.
Erau is a royal festival made to remember the founding of the last royal residence called Tenggarong ca. 250 years ago and to keep the contact between the royal family and the history and the people strong.
Kutai with it's ca. 1600 years of existence is the oldest kingdom of Indonesia.
Because of it's oil it is also the most richest area of Indonesia,so with this oilwealth it can bring back in a very interesting way the traditional culture and history for every one in Indonesia and from abroad.
It started on sunday 26 july in the old sultan's palace (and museum) Keraton Mulawarman with a ceremony called Mendirikan Ayu. It was interesting to see,that more and more the Crownprince Aji Pangeran Adipati Prabu Anum Surya Adiningrat takes over the leading responsibilities from his 84 years old father Sultan Haji Aji Mohammad Salehoeddin II.
The sultan wants to make the crownprince more and more acquianted with the royal duties he has now and in the future.
Before there were also some rituals to prepare the Erau Festival. Exactly 4 days before it started with the Beluluh Ceremony for the sultan and the crownprince in the nearby the old palace lying new palace (ready as a palace 7 years ago, but built in a traditional style; wednesday).
Then on thursday there was the Menjamu Benua ceremony to remember, that the Erau Festival has to do with the past.
Then finally the Merangin ceremony was held on thursday, friday and sunday night.
The actual Erau Festival will take place from 26 july until 3 august.
It is not only a festival of display of royal culture,but also of the general local culture and of the cultures which later came to the sultanate of Kutai and last but not least also to make a good cooperationship between the original 2 peoples;the Dayaks and the Melayu peoples; and all the other people, who now stay in Kutai Kartanegara.
Officials of the other Kutai districts and also many people from everywhere are going to the very pleasant royal town of Tenggarong, where most of the Erau Festival takes place.This is a town, which is called by many people as the Brunei of Indonesia:because of it's wealth, display of royal culture, but which still could retain it's historical beauty.
It is extraordinary to see every time,when the bi-anual Erau Festival is held, how proud the young people are about their own culture.
The displays of the f.i. royal dances have a real genuine atmosphere in itself. That is because the Kutai sultan's dynasty are one of the few dynasties in Indonesia, who really dedicated themselves always to keep the traditional culture alive.
With this the Kutai people are still happy to have the roots of their own culture.
And a genuine feeling in an old culture is that what a culture everywhere makes it so interesting.
May the heart of the Kutai culture always remains in it.

King of Barru visits Holland

In S.W.-Sulawesi; near the city of Makassar; lies the area of Barru. The candidate-king of Barru is His Highness Haji Andi Hasanudin Petta Tawang. He is the in 1932 born son of the last great king, or Arung of Barru: Arung I Jonjo Karaeng Limbangparang (1908-1945).
The dynasty of Barru was quite attached to the dynasty of the very powerfull sultans of Gowa. When Andi Hasanudin will be installed later he will be ca. the 24th ruler of Barru. Like happens more times in modern day Indonesia the present Arung is now making a book about the history of the principality of Indonesia and like they also say in other areas of Indonesia : "Our history is for a big part lying in the Dutch archives.".
For that reason the king will arrive in Holland on the 23th of july this year with a governmentdelegation of 9 people of the kabupaten(district)of Barru. This district also contains the 2 former principalities of Tanette and Malusetassi.
Also we hope, that with this visit the contacts between Holland and this part of Indonesia will be a bit restored.

The Return of the Crownprince of Kutai Kartanegara to his birthplace in Holland

The triumph of the Royal Culture of Kutai in Holland

On the 25th of may 2009 it was finally the day of His Royal Highness the Pangeran Makhota,or Crownprince of Kutai Kartanegara:Pangeran Aji Adipati Prabu Anum Surja Adiningrat to try to see his house,where he was born in 1951 in the town of Wassenaar; near Leiden in Holland. There his father,who then was the crownprince of Kutai Kartanegara,was studying at the Royal University of Leiden.
The Crownprince returned as a boy of 5 years to Kutai. But first the Crownprince had to fullfill his duties to lead the cultural dance and musicgroup of Kutai Kartanegara at the Tong Tong Fair in Den Haag. That is for the present promotion of extraordinary places and cultures of Indonesia in Europe. First the Crownprince in the presence of the Chief of the Department of Economic Development of Kutai Kartanegara; Pangeran Gondo Prawiro with his wife,and their respective staffs were greated with extra respect by the organisation of Tong Tong Fair. Then the show of traditional and modern culture of Kutai Kartanegara began.A trully impressive show,which luckily also impresses the very big audience (the audience hall was filled until the last place) at the place of the dances and show of modern clothes with inspiration of local weaving traditions.
The royal dances,the general Melayu dances and the Dayak dances; accompagnied by the for Dutch ears very unique sound of Kutai music and also the modern clothes show took 75 minutes. The Dutch audience was same impressed by the unique Kutai culture, which was because of their liveliness and happy character very liked by the Dutch audience. After 75 minutes the total audience was very unhappy, that it already ended, because they found it less from boring. The Crownprince espacially was accompagnied by the representative of the Dutch National Council of Nobility: Drs. Ferdinand F. Baron de Smeth van Alphen (whose family was for generations very close to the Royal Family of Holland). The Baron has the last years a project to try to exchange experiences with the Royal and Princely families of Indonesia with the Noble and Royal families of Europe concerning theirfunctioning in the so-called modern time;espacially their value for preserving the old culture and some moral values as well. The Crownprince was very proud to explain time after time his culture to this important nobleman from Holland. Coming friday the Dutch nobility;lead by the Baron, will be present again at a show of Kutai and other Indonesia culture at a cultural day in Den Haag;organised by the Indonesian embassy in the Netherlands. The Dutch audience was also very impressed to have a real crownprince of Indonesia near them for am while and more,they were impressed because it was also the Crownprince of the oldest kingdom of Indonesia(Kutai already exists for 1600 years). After the event the Crownprince was not able to refind his house of birth. But that would come later. Together with Pangeran Gondo Prawiro and their staffs he had to do more work to strengthen the position of Kutai as a tourist destination and also had to talk with Dutch archive researchers to try to find more old historical Kutai pictures, films and other documents, in which they were quite succesfull. After a bit relaxing as well some times and trying the for their taste strange Dutch food (only the Crownprince was happy to again taste the food of the country), where he had lived the first 5 years of his life like cheese, milk, havermout (Dutch porridge) and the best strawberries of the world (from Holland).
At 22.30 the royal- and civil delegation from Kutai Kartanegara finally could lay down their duties for the promotion of the royal and general culture of Kukar in Holland and went exhausted to sleep. Many Dutch people only remained with one question:
where the Kutai Kartanegara dance and musicgroup had taken the enormous amount of energy with which they performed their culture; a culture which was trully not in their mind,but in their heart.
Kutai culture:a trully unique culture.And that is no flattering.

Hitu-one of the few principalities of the S-Moluccans still existing

In general the south part of the Moluccans are divided in several, or better said:many areas called negris and not really in principalities, or kingdoms.
That was because of the ruling systems in this area.
Also because the former foreign governments in here encouraged and stimulated seperate rule in all these areas.
There was some kind of ruling system, which was a development to more centralised rule, but wishes inside the society and the foreign stimulance of divided rule also didn't really speed up this process.
In general only the Hitu area in the north of Ambon island (covering a big part of that area ), the island of Kisar, some areas on Ceram, the negris of Kilang, Nusanive and Soya( and some more) are considered as a sort of principality.
Hitu exists as a semi-principality in development (so you can describe it at least) already for ca. 500 years. Before the begin of the first fereation head in 1512 there were some rulers, who were also described as the ruler of Hitu, but not of the Hitu as a federation, but of a negri.
In history the federation rule was described as being divided over 4
lines,2 delivered the federationhead, 1 the Raja Hitu(from which are descended a later Raja Hitu line) and another ruler.
The Hitu federation was brought to an end officially with the violent death of the last federationhead, who was the Kapitan Hitu;in 1643.
From a son are descended the later rajas of Hitulama, who are considered as the heirs of the Hitu principality.
There are also the rulers of Hitumessing with the same familyname, who live in the same area, but have a different people to rule as negri rulers.
On 21-3-2007 Upu Latu Sitania,or Raja Salhana Pelu was installed as the 37th raja of an area,which ever carried a Hitu-name and the 19th descendant of the first Hitu ruler (the negri) :Raja Abdul Kadir.
The present raja is born in 1975 and has studied economics and now is working in the businessworld.
He tries to live a clean moral live and even punished his brother, who was temptated by gambling some time ago.
The crownhat of the raja is a copy of the original one,but the objects on it and the design is original.
The Pelu dynasty is known to be pietistic,but not fundamentalistic.
The Hitu federation was formed by several negris, which still recognize the special traditional position of the Raja of Hitulama.
The several hunderds S-Moluccan negris with their rulers are united in a council of upu latu's (rajas) although not all has the right to have according the tradition the title of raja), which is f.i. in 2009 led by Raja Abdullah Malawat of Mamala (also a member of the Hitu federation).
